Commentary by Ralph R. Waggener: City taxes and county taxes By Ralph Roy Waggener, Editor and Publisher, It's Just for a Smile News Personal Commentary Seems a lot of people don't understand county taxes and Columbia city taxes. Columbia does not get road work from the county; it has its own road department paid for from Columbia city taxes. All Adair county tax money for roads comes from county taxes paid for by both Columbia residents as well as county tax payers. Tamara Rowell writes: Why all roads should have same priority Personal opinion of the writer This is Tamara Rowell and the reason all roads should be treated equally is because every life in the county matters and if there is an emergency even out here on West 80 and the roads are not clear then there is no way for help to get out here and we do have some older folks out here and if we can get help, then it means we don't matter and the trucks can take a trip out to the rural every two to three trips in town just to help not just the people, but our law enforcement that live in the rural areas cause a lot of them live out here, too; so it would only make sense to do all the roads and for every business in town, there are still consumers that live out here, too; so i guess what I'm saying is, if you don't want our money, then leave us snowed in; and if we don't matter then why do we pay for the town of Columbia. Thank you, - Tamara Rowell 2016-01-22 21:50:47 | Comments | Printable version

Kelvin Bailey: County dweller appreciates clearing priorities Kelvin Bailey writes: Why wouldn't the road crews clear the streets in town before they get to 80 West? For every person who lives on 80 West, there are 50 who live in town. For every business or service located on 80 West, there are 100 in town. Very few people are scraping off their windshields and shoveling their driveways today in effort to get to 80 West. It seems to me it would be in severe lack of judgment and priorities to clear 80 West before town. - Kelvin Bailey (Lesser Fairplay)Comments related to: James Rowell: Good ol boys in Town come first 2016-01-22 20:15:34 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Commentary
Snow silently stacked, hung on shepherd's crook. A CM Short Birdseed went out first thing this morning. An inch of snow quickly covered it over before any birds braved the weather. As the day progressed, birds could be seen sneaking in after the cats ate their food under the carport. The crumbs left by the cats made for perfect bird bits so all got fed. As the bird feeder sat untouched all day, the wind carved the steadily falling snow into a perfect block of ice. - Linda 2016-01-22 19:56:49 | Comments | Printable version

Cool Springs: Feeling bad for the critters! And their farmers Click on headline for letter with photo(s) By Guy Babin Some farmers talk tough, because mostly, they are. Most farmers with livestock; those worth a flip that is, care much more for their animals than they might tell over coffee at the D&F Grocery. Those farmers typically don't so much get attached to their animals, but a bond does form as they take care of them day and night, through birth and death, both drought and blizzard. Senator Max Wise's Legislative Update: 22 Jan 2016 ![]() Personal Commentary Although week three of the General Assembly was short due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and the inclement weather Friday, the Kentucky Senate passed significant bills and welcomed visitors who braved the snow in Frankfort. On Tuesday we passed two of our priority bills: Senate Bill (SB) 4 and SB 10. SB 4 would require those seeking an abortion to have a face-to-face, in-person counseling session with a physician 24 hours prior to the procedure. This effort to promote the rights of the unborn passed with bipartisan support. Senate Bill 10 would move statewide constitutional elections to even-numbered years. Final passage of SB 10 would save the Commonwealth and its counties an estimated $20 million per election cycle. Research has also shown that hundreds of thousands of additional Kentucky voters participate in elections during even-numbered years, as opposed to odd-numbered years. The measure would not extend Governor Bevin's current, four-year term. Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2016-01-22 13:25:01 | Comments | Printable version
