Commentary by Ralph R. Waggener: City taxes and county taxes By Ralph Roy Waggener, Editor and Publisher, It's Just for a Smile News Personal Commentary Seems a lot of people don't understand county taxes and Columbia city taxes. Columbia does not get road work from the county; it has its own road department paid for from Columbia city taxes. All Adair county tax money for roads comes from county taxes paid for by both Columbia residents as well as county tax payers. We Columbians pay the same Adair County taxes as county property owners pay plus we also pay city taxes. We don't get county road work nor do we get much Adair Sheriff work done here in Columbia because Columbia has a 1 million dollar plus police budget that is paid for from Columbia tax payers. While not complaining about paying for county services that we do not get here in Columbia, I believe that Adair County taxpayers should know that we help you have better roads from our taxes. We in Columbia pay for services we have to pay Columbia taxes to get. The city of Columbia let our Columbia Water and Sewer system be taken over by the Adair County Water District in order for the county to be able to get the new water system; Columbia has more water taps per mile than in the county making it more profitable for the water district. Former Mayor Pat Bell made this move for the county water district to help it out. Some people have spread rumors that the Columbia Water and Sewer works was not run profitable, and that is not why the County District got the city water system. I do believe that Columbia City Police Department should be combined with the Adair Sheriff's office for cost savings and that all though we are paying county taxes, Columbia should contribute additional money to run it. It's easy to understand why residents above the Green River think they don't get a fair shake because they are so far from the courthouse and Adair citizens in Breeding area are a long distance as well. We are all Adair County taxpayers, both in Columbia as well as the rest of Adair County and we are all in this together - together we stand divided we fall is our Kentucky motto. A lot could be done to better ourselves working together and a lot of tax money could be put to better use if we had transparency in both Columbia and Adair County Governments, and that's where you come in. We should come together as taxpayers and demand true transparency. Just my thought. - Ralph Roy Waggener This story was posted on 2016-01-22 21:53:52
