Poetry by V. Kolbenschlag: Dan Trabue, clean shaven man

Dan Trabue was clean shaven man
Poetry by Vonnie Koblenschlag
We assume, perhaps, that some time ago
All men wore beards; that is just not so!
George Wahington's face shows a clean shave
And Jefferson's, too, rates a hairless rave.
Declaration signers beginning our nation
Made sure to shave on every occasion.
Early governors of our state
Are clean shaven in each portrait.

Even Daniel Boone carried a straight edge razor
During his job as trail blazer.

Yes, it may seem strange, but it's historically true
During the lifetime of Dan Trabue
A man would wear no mustache or beard
I'll bet that Mary, Dan's wife, concurred.
Whiskers were not a colonial man's style
And that custom lasted for quite a while
Until mid 1800s. Then the hairy face
Became the fashion put in place.

Portraying an historical figure is an art
With clothing and hair playing a part.

Wants to know why youth basketball eliminated at Jim Blair

'Mr. Charlie Crawhorn has put his heart and soul into organizing this program for our community and those that do not support this, in my opinion, shouldn't be on a decision making committee, whatsoever.' - Amanda Firkins

By Amanda Firkins
Personal commentary

I just cannot believe that the youth basketball program has been eliminated from the Jim Blair recreation center. I went there today to sign my daughter up for a basketball team that was affordable and would provide each child a fair chance at playing and was stunned to find out that no sooner than the director received the registration forms and money for the signups, after all he had put into this program, that he had to return the stack of over what looked to be 50 or more forms and give the money back to the parents.

Not only has this upset more than a few of the parents in this community, but also, the many children that were excited about this program no longer have it to look forward to. I don't know why this program was cut, but I do know that Mr. Charlie Crawhorn has put his heart and soul into organizing this program for our community and those that do not support this, in my opinion, shouldn't be on a decision making committee, whatsoever. Also, I know that at least 50 or more parents, including myself, in our community would like to know why this program was cut and what the future holds for our children with people like this making decisions that do not favor youth programs? --Amanda Firkins

Marlene Hamby recalls her son's 'special friend'

Comments re photo 51656 Bunny is getting pretty fragile after year of hard use

By Marlene Hamby That's really precious and brings back some pretty special memories of my own children at that age.

The only way I could keep my son's "special friend' intact and clean was to wait until he went to sleep at night. Then I'd carefully remove his little buddy from his clutches, mend all the well-worn tears, replace any missing stuffing, and then throw it into the washer and dryer.

After all these years, Bear is still Toni Ann's favorite toy

It's still a wonderful snuggly toy, and a connection to her loving grandfather who just happened to have been the late former President of Lindsey Wilson College, V.P. Henry- CM
Reminiscence on seeing: Bunny is getting pretty fragile after year of hard use

By Martha Berry

I guess all children have a favorite toy.

My Dad gave my oldest child a white bear when she was born. "Bear" has been all over the world with Toni Ann. It has lived in several states as well as in Spain when she lived there.

When she moved from California to Florida several years ago, Bear sat on the console of her car all the way across the country.

She is a grandmother now and still cherishes Bear even though it's body and head have been separated for years. Bear's head just balances on its shoulders wherever it sits.

Bear is still a beloved part of her life.

Not only was it a wonderful snuggly toy, it is a connection to her loving Grandfather. --Martha Berry

Toby, the LLAMA, is quite the character

Comments re photo 51638 Pumpkin Patch Petting zoo has an alpaca

Suzanna Streeval writes:
Just so you know, Toby is a llama, not an alpaca. He, along with is Mom - Tina, & his newest sibling, reside on the Hagedorn sheep farm to help ensure that creatures, such as coyotes, don't bother the sheep. Toby is quite the character! He has a blossoming personality & will share kisses with you should you get close enough. On the other hand, you certainly don't want to make him mad or you could walk away covered in llama stomach acid. Toby & the other critters at the petting zoo are the 'children' of Vince & Kayla Hagedorn who reside right here in Columbia. - Suzanna Streeval
Thanks, Suzanna Streeval for letting Shamarie and me know; we've changed the caption, and don't you go tell Toby what we did; we don't want him mad at us! Linda is in on a deal for a llama right now; needs one for Hailey & Tillie, Evan & Graham, Great Mema and herself, at least that's her notion. Thanks for the fascinating information about the animals. I'm now wondering about their policy against groundhogs. If there is enmity between llamas and them - I'm sold too. - EW

Greater Bliss Correspondent won't cover WRH/Tax in court

Our valued frequent contributor and commentator, Victoria Pike, wrote to tell us she won't be at the hospital tax hearing this morning. It's the one case listed in the court news in CM events for today, Thursday, October 3, 2013, at 10amCT, in Adair Circuit Court, Adair Judicial Center, 201 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY:
12-C1-00269: The Farmers national Bank of Danville vs. Adair County P(ublic Hospital District)
She said she's hoping for good news on the situation. "Be sure to get details," she mandated, "I have a dentist appointment. Calf belted me under the chin and broke a tooth. Calf still living. Have a good day."

Maury comments on vines on mailboxes

Comments re photo 51653 Is there a prettier mailbox in the county

Maury Lewis writes:
It is beautiful, but if you are a mail person it as something that attracts creatures such as bees, spiders and in the county, snakes like to crawl up in a vine to get out of the sun. I have always wanted to plant something around my mailbox but an acquaintance of mine sent me a picture, and said "This is why we don't like things growing on mailboxes," and there was a snake laying on top of the mailbox in a beautiful vine. No, Ed, I don't have the picture; it was a very long time ago. - Maury Lewis
Thanks - Thanks for the precaution. But I'd sure take the chance for the beauty of the mandevilla. It's gorgeous. Given, some snakes around here are not pleasant companions, but most are just doing their job, making a living, keeping down the rodent and insect populations, and making, for some good barn cats or pets. Would love to see photos of pink Mandevilla in other settings. - EW

Adair School Divisions have wide population variances

By Ed Waggener

At last the last school board meeting, Thursday, September 26, 2013, Director of Pupil Personnel Robbie Harmon reported figures he had obtained from Adair County Court Clerk Sheila Blair on the numbers of registered voters in each of the five divisions, listed below with current board member and in order of numbers represented:
  1. Division 4 - Floyd Burton - 3,018
  2. Division 5 - Mike Harris - 2,996
  3. Division 3 - Joseph Payne - 2,480
  4. Division 1 - Greg Willis - 2,245
  5. Division 2 - Quin Lasley - 2,073
If the 12,812 were divided equally, the number in each district would be 2,562. Division 3 best fits that number now.

The disparity between Floyd Burton's Division 1 with 3,018, and Quin Lasley's 2,073 is approximately 50%.

No action was taken on redistricting at the meeting. Mr. Harmon suggested delaying a decision until after the Adair County Fiscal Court takes action on redrawing Magisterial District maps.
