Poetry by Robert Stone: Snow covers variation

Snow covers variation
-a poem by Robert Stone
I'm not kidding, I'm relaxed,
funny thoughts fill my head,
a haunting voice cries out
take care to find the sacred way
take care because it's snowing
and all will soon be sameness.
-- Robert Stone, 13 April 2008
A group of friends met to write and read poetry for several years. One of our exercises was the "word-list poem" where each person put in one or two random words. Each of us then wrote a poem (or two) using all those words. The list for this poem was:

kidding - snowing - relaxed - care - head - funny - thought - haunting - voice - find - sacred - way

Our word list poems only rarely had titles but I have given this one a title for ColumbiaMagazine. -Robert Stone

Remembers the Glasgows, wonderful Graded Hill neighbors

About: Remembering Shirley Glasgow: Gratitude for a dear friend

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I too was a neighbor of the Glasgows. Also the Downses, Woodys, Howells, Akins and other neighbors.

My growing up years included my wonderful neighbors and their children.

I can't think of one negative thing to say about any of these people.

One of my memories is when the Shirleys moved into the neighborhood. It was an exciting thing to a young child.

Times have surely changed but I will never forget all those wonderful people. In my whole life,i have never heard a single negative thing about Mr. or Mrs. Glasgow.

I know the family will surely miss him. There aren't many of my "old" neighbors left, but they will never be forgotten. My thoughts are with the Glasgow family during this time.s/Linda Wilson Grigsby

Wonders if utilities restoring service to those with unpaid bills

About: Snow Expected: No School in Adair County KY today

Ed,

Just saw a CNN segment re Memphis - due to the cold weather the mayor has ordered the utility system to restore power to those whose power had been turned off due to nonpayment of bills.

This order is to last until the weather improves. Do you know if there is any arrangement in Adair County? Surely in this economy there are some whose utilities have been turned off, and are in need of heat and electricity in this cold weather.

Mary Keltner

I don't about the situation here in Adair County. It is hard to believe any gas or electric utility, or water and sewer departments would be so heartless as to not take basic human needs into account. We'll be looking for the answers to your questions. -EW

Remembering Shirley Glasgow: Gratitude for a dear friend

About: A Eulogy of Glenn Shirley Glasgow by his son, Pat Glasgow

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

"Shirley came by yesterday." -JAMES WOODY.

With these words , my 90+ year old father, with a gleam in his eye, left unsaid -but understood - his gratitude for his dear friend, Shirley Glasgow.

For almost 60 years my father's and Shirley's lives were linked - neighbors, business partners, and friends.

I cannot recall my childhood without thinking (with fondness) of the Glasgows.

Shirley and Frances were always there for us as substitute chauffeurs and surrogate parents.

Shirley was there for my father until his death in 2007, sharing stories, jokes and that memorable chuckle.

I am so grateful for the life of Shirley Glasgow.

Remembering Shirley Glasgow: Reader moved by eulogy

About: A Eulogy for My Father Glenn Shirley Glasgow

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I was reading the lovely eulogy of Mr. Shirley.

I did not know Mr. Shirley myself, but all I could think as I read this tribute was, how wonderful he was..

I cried as I read the love that went into this eulogy.

And the letter Mr. Glasgow sent home from the military to his new born son was so heartfelt and touching.

The Glasgow family has lost someone they deeply love and this was so well expressed with the words. May God hold them and keep them during their time of sadness.

And thank you (the Glasgow family), for showing us the meaning of love.

Comment on school cancellation notification

About: Snow Expected No School in Adair County KY today

It is pretty bad when your child stands outside waiting on the bus, only to find out it has been cancelled. Not everyone listen's to Columbia radio, i listen to Campbellsville, plus had the Tv on local channels. They told everyone but Columbia. Columbia schools is the worst to call in for school cancellations. Maybe they should pay the dr bills for the kids who get sick waiting in the cold!!!!!!!!!

s/Pam Woodrum

CM NOTE: Our experience with the local school announcements is that it couldn't be better. I dont know what time some children go to the school bus stop to wait for the bus, but ColumbiaMagazine.com posted the announcement at the top of the front page and in events, at 5:03amCT!, after Mr. Jones called us at 4:57amCT this morning. He always calls us as early as he knows school will be called off, and I think he notifies the other media just as quickly. Hate to disagree with you, but I don't know how Mr. Jones could do a better job. -ED WAGGENER

Governor touts job creation, education in State of Commonwealth

Asks legislators for bipartisan cooperation

From Governor Steve Beshear's Communications Office

FRANKFORT, Ky. - In his third State of the Commonwealth address, Gov. Steve Beshear reminded legislators of their bipartisan successes in job creation, education and budget balancing -- despite a plodding economy and dismal budget outlook. He asked legislators to come together again to solve the state's worst budget forecast in generations.

"With a mindset of cooperation, we've made government work again for the people," said Gov. Beshear. "I pledge to Kentuckians from west to east that I will continue to operate with this spirit of cooperation."

Amy Pike sends directions to Spurlington Tunnel

Directions to Spurlington Tunnel sent

Tunnel is on private property, she says; so owners permission should be obtained

About: Visitor wants directions to Spurlington Tunnel

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Hello...

Getting to the Spurlington Tunnel is quite simple. (From the South on KY 55, from Columbia, KY. -CM): When you get to Campbellsville, turn right at the second stop light onto Hwy 68 East. Go all the way through Campbellsville (and many stop lights) until you reach the caution light just before the Marion County line and turn right onto Hwy 744 (which is Spurlington RD).

After you turn onto Spurlington Rd, turn left on the second road - Parrallel RD.

There is only one house on that road. Park on the right side.

I would let the homeowners know why you are there as a courtesy since you are on their property.

On the far right of their house is a path which takes you to the tunnel. I am thinking the tunnel is about 1/2 mile long.

It's generally very muddy, so be prepared. It is definitely worth the time and trip.

Hope this helps.

Have fun and be careful.

s/Amy Pike

Corporal Glasgow's Letter to His New-born Son

Introduction to A WWII letter to a new born son
See also: "He was truly a good man," the obituary of Glenn Shirley Glasgow

This letter, written to me shortly after my birth, is a letter that myfamily and I have long cherished. Corporal Glasgow was somewhere inWales, preparing for the D-Day invasion. I arrived on a snowy winter'snight and my mother's best friend, Nancy Cobb, rushed from thedelivery room to telegram Dad of my birth.

Dad used the typewriter ofhis commanding officer, Captain Clark, to prepare the letter. Thetypographical errors, additions, and other features may well expressthe excitement Dad experienced on receipt of the news that he had ason.

The letter, 65 years old, doesn't copy well, but its messages areclear! I share it now, just as it was typed, with all of our manyfamily friends in Adair County as many of those attending hisvisitation asked me to do so. It is a tribute not only to my father, but to his wife, Frances, whom he loved so much. The lastsentence Tell her that I am well, and that she shouldn't worry aboutme is so typical of Dad and is just as applicable today as it was onFebruary 12, 1944. Rest assured Dad, I have given her that message! -Glenn P. (Pat) Glasgow, Jan. 5, 2010.

Thanks.

Letter of Appreciation from the family of Shirley Glasgow

A Letter of Appreciation to Glenn Shirley Glasgow's Many Health Care Givers Over the last several years, and particularly the last three years.

My father, Glenn Shirley Glasgow, has benefited from the services of many health care givers in Adair, Barren, Green, and Taylor Counties. Receiving multiple treatments at the J. Graham Brown Cancer Center (Taylor County), and T. J. Sampson Hospital, and through numerous admissions to West Lake Regional Hospital and Jane Todd Memorial Skilled Care Facility, he has been under the care of numerous physicians, particularly A.G.Herrera, Jr., MD, Robert Kell, MD, John L. Korba, MD, and Barrett Lessenberry, MD. By each physician and in each facility each health care giver (Admission Office Staff, Laboratory Technicians, X-ray Technicians, Phlebotomists, Dietitians, Cleaning Staff, Nurses Aides, Nurses, Physical Therapists, and Respiratory Therapists, to name only a few) provided competent, compassionate care.

From my perspective serving on the staff of two medical schools (Washington University St. Louis and Loyola University Chicago), and from the perspective of my sister Susan, serving as a regional vice president of a major rehabilitation care company (Rehab Care), we can categorically state that the local health care services function competently and compassionately.

His pharmacy (Nation's Medicines), medical equipment (MLS Medical) provider, and rest home (A & L Rest Home) did a wonderful job assisting the family with his many medical needs during the last weeks of his life.

It is not possible to name all of Dad's many care givers, but if you provided his medical services you will surely remember him and the services you personally provided.

Collectively, your joint efforts extended his life by many months.

We, his family, want to express our sincere appreciation and gratitude for the many services you each provided so well. To each and everyone, we thank you so very much!

Prepared on Behalf of the Family of Glenn Shirley Glasgow

Jones family sends thanks to Columbia-Adair Co. Fire Dept.

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

When you live in a small town your entire life and the folks around you are your friends and neighbors, it never occurs to you that they wouldn't be around when you need them. We are lucky here in Columbia, because our friends and neighbors are also members of our own Columbia-Adair County Volunteer Fire Department.

My entire life, I have watched these volunteers risk their lives each and every day to keep our community from harm, but it wasn't until just recently when we had a house full of smoke, that I actually realized just how lucky we are; to be able to call 9-1-1 and ask for the fire department and they show up a few minutes later on the doorstep at 3:00 in the morning.

My family and I were one of the lucky ones who just had a little smoke in the house, but our fire department came just the same, ready to do whatever it took to keep our family safe, so we could go back to bed and feel safe knowing brave volunteers are just a phone call away in our small town.

We want to personally thank the firemen of the Columbia-Adair County Fire department for their compassion and professionalism during our recent smoke emergency. We are so lucky to live in Adair County.

Sincerely,Mark and Leila Jones
