Trish Zatkoff on alcohol: God gave us free will

By Trish Hadley Zatkoff
Personal Commentary

In reading the letters concerning the wet/dry debate, it seems people are blaming the "alcohol". It sounds similar to the anti-gun people blaming the gun. Or the police being blamed when a criminal disrespects their authority.

God gave us free will. For those concerned about our kids being able to purchase alcohol, why don't we put forth the effort to teach our children how to be responsible and make right decisions?

Grant Funds Available for Watershed Restoration

Funds Available for Non-point Source Pollution Control Projects

By James Roe

Frankfort, KY - Grant Funds for projects that help clean up polluted streams, rivers, lakes and groundwater, and for projects that protect water resources, are available from the Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection's Division of Water (DOW). The grants would provide funding for watershed restoration projects and watershed plan development, as well as other projects that reduce and prevent runoff pollution.

Runoff pollution, also known as non-point source pollution (NPS), is the number one contributor to water pollution in Kentucky, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the impaired rivers, streams and lakes in the state. Runoff pollution occurs when water runs across the land and carries sediment, nutrients, pesticides, metals, and animal and human waste into streams, rivers, and groundwater.

AGs demand protection from debt collection cellphone robocalls

by Terry Sebastian, Crystal Staley

Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller and Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear today joined forces in urging Congress to reverse the new law allowing debt collection robocalls to cellphones. Previously, the federal government banned all robocalls to cellphones because they interrupt consumers' privacy and may cost consumers a charge.

Zoeller and Beshear believe this provision is a significant setback in the fight to defend their citizens' telephone privacy rights, and particularly burdens young Americans struggling with student debt.

Does anyone know of plan to narrow lanes of new Heartland?

Heartland plans do need upgrading: It needs to be 4-lane all the way to 1-64 to Simpsonville, and it needs to include an Eastern Bypass from KY 55 to KY 80 and Cumberland Parkway between Russell Springs and Columbia. - ED WAGGENER

By Ed Waggener

Is the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet planning to narrow the lanes in the new Columbia Bypass to the Adair County line Heartland Parkway? Reports being circulating in town is that the lanes will be reduced in width from 12 ft. to 11 ft. where there are 3 lanes planned. Narrowing the road in anticipation of more traffic doesn't sound like progress to most. Comments or corrections welcome. - EW

Commentary: Taxed enough already

In response to: Article 81522: Letter: Raise taxes to make up for lost alcohol sales

Personal Commentary by Ed Pipalski

Adair County's Property Tax rates are at their Constitutional Limits of $.50 per hundred (school is separate). For Real Property it is at $.46 per hundred, there will be no "compensating rate" increases across the board and Tangible (Inventory, Equipment & Machinery) is already at $.52 per hundred an Unconstitutionally Assessed Tax.

In my opinion, local government is quite large enough as demonstrated in its lack of restraint and obedience to the limits imposed by the people upon it in the form of the Constitution. In fact, a case could be made for tyranny without the constraints of the Constitution.

Guy Babin: It's already 'Wet' in Paradise USA

Guy Babin writes:
Ed, Et.al.,

I'm here to report that contrary to recent news, it's already "wet" here in Paradise, USA.

Too wet to fertilize the pastures, fix the muddy ruts from winter hay haulin', and too wet to build badly-needed fences.

I suspect if patterns hold true, It'll also be "dry" come June/July. Too dry for the fescue and orchard grass to grow, too dry to dig a post hole, and dry enough to slow Cool Springs Creek to a mere trickle.

Since we often cope with both "wet" and "dry" extremes here in our neck of Paradise, we really could use an occasional libation to ease the stress!

Yes, it is happening again and certainly not because someone is afraid. Sure you can go to Lebanon and buy all the booze you want, but if it isn't within walking distance it isn't as easy for a underage minor to get.

You must be 21 you say??? Give me a break!!! Kids buy cigarettes here all the time and you think they won't booze?
