Commentary: Taxed enough already In response to: Article 81522: Letter: Raise taxes to make up for lost alcohol sales Personal Commentary by Ed Pipalski Adair County's Property Tax rates are at their Constitutional Limits of $.50 per hundred (school is separate). For Real Property it is at $.46 per hundred, there will be no "compensating rate" increases across the board and Tangible (Inventory, Equipment & Machinery) is already at $.52 per hundred an Unconstitutionally Assessed Tax. In my opinion, local government is quite large enough as demonstrated in its lack of restraint and obedience to the limits imposed by the people upon it in the form of the Constitution. In fact, a case could be made for tyranny without the constraints of the Constitution. Perhaps we should refocus our efforts on finding out what went wrong in our system of "Checks and Balances" that an unelected "Taxing Board" can swindle the Adair County taxpayers out of 12.5 million dollars in hopes that by understanding what has happened we can plug the faults in our "system" of checks & balances to ensure this Constitutional failure can never happen to any other taxpayers. The "board" does not represent the taxpayers; in fact they represent the Fiscal Court that appointed them and the former Hospital itself, taxpayers had no say. A 12.5 million dollar loan for construction, the money cannot Constitutionally be used for anything else, but it was. Were engineering drawings developed? Were permits issued and contracts let out or was it just a big government swindle? We are taxed enough already and more than anything else I strongly object to growing a tyrannical form of government, we need instead, starve the beast to tame it into submission. This vote is about growing government largess nothing more, nothing less. --Ed Pipalski This story was posted on 2016-03-04 08:18:43
