Lea Ann Parnell: Response to Pro-Legal Sales statement

Comments re article 81438 Jane Potts Why no prayer gatherings to end bootlegger sales

By Lea Ann Parnell
Personal Commentary

I keep reading over and over again how wrong the Family Values group is to hold a prayer service over the upcoming vote. How they are a bunch of hypocrites to stand against the legal sale of alcohol and not against the bootleggers, abuse, drug use, and crime in our community.

Scenic Russell Co., KY: Beautiful Moss Lawn, Esto

2016-02-29 - Oak Road, Esto, Russell County, KY. - Photo by Linda Waggener.
There's a beautiful lawn covered in moss along Oaks Road, in Russell County, KY. It almost certainly had a helping hand to reach this stage. Oaks Road is a gorgeous drive between KY 92 and Blair Road. Greasy Creek runs parallel much of the way, and it, has beautiful mossy banks, riffles, and rocky cliffsides, rife with wildflowers some coming on. (Anyone know how a moss lawn like this one can be developed? It's delightful. - EW

Jane Potts: Why no prayer gatherings to end bootlegger sales?

By Jane Potts
Personal commentary

Group has prayer to stop the legal sale of alcohol. Never heard of them gathering for prayer against bootleggers, drugs, child abuse, or any other problems, our county has faced. Just wonder why it has suddenly became an issue. We have 3 business owners live here, but business is in wet county. Hum, what's up with that? Maybe more revenue there. - Jane Potts

Briar Hopper: Ex-pat throws two-cents worth in Wet/Dry vote

Writer, who grew up "above the river," and a "child of the 70's." Who has averaged really well for these parts. He remembers brew and peach brandy gatherings while at Adair County High School . . . and they all did well. As well, there were trips Three Pines in Marion County or to one of the numerous bootleggers of the day. He left Adair County, not because it was dry, but to find somewhere he could better opportunities. His stance is both enlightening and entertaining. Apparently, he feels that he's done very well with this piece for the paper, because he signs his real name as big a Patrick Henry at the wind-up of the article.

By "Briar Hopper"

Hello Ed,

As a former resident of Adair County and where I still have a ton of relatives living both in the county and within Columbia proper, I'd like to throw out my two-cents.

Letter: The vote is about legality, not alcohol

Note: We were asked not to print a name with these comments, because the author has to live with folks on the other side of the issue. However, we do have contact information on file.

Here is something that has been on my mind lately and really it should bother everyone involved. Let's be perfectly clear here, this issue is a vote for the legal sale of alcohol. I did not see any individuals throw stones at the issue of bootleggers before this Economic Movement. Now that it is in the cards for Legal Sales to be in Adair Co. you are up in arms? Where is the logic?

AFV & PAC organization information not easy to find

Finding out who is who in Adair Family Values (AFV) or PAC is difficult. What CM can find as of this point, is what has already been posted on CM: That Shannon Sexton is chair of PAC. We appreciate her candor on that point. Mike Ellis' name is listed with Adair Family values? An some early financial numbers are online for both groups. Or reliably report other officers in either organization? What about: Money they are raising? Sources? Does anyone else think this information is important? Courteous comments are welcome
Click on headline for complete comment

By Ed Waggener

At this point, the public seems to know the name of only the chair in either Progress in Adair County (PAC), and only the name of Adair Family Values. (Previously, we had posted that the material is available at the County Court Clerk's office, but Clerk Lisa Greer said that, because the Clerk's office only has a facsimile, she has received legal advice that the clerk's office cannot make prints of the document.)

Shannon Sexton has written several commentaries on the upcoming Wet/Dry vote to be voted March 22, 2016 in Adair County as chair of PAC.

So far, no one from the Adair Family Values has written as the Chair of that organization.

It would seem a simple matter for both groups to state the names of their organizers, the funds they have raised and spent, and from whom. I'd like to know.

From a No voter: Legalization brings normalcy

By Jana Esch

I'm not sure if some of the statements being tossed around about legalizing alcohol are coming from misinformation or misconception, but from my experience I can tell you that most opinions I'm reading on the "yes" side simply aren't true when it comes to under aged drinking.

I lived in Northern Indiana (where all is "wet") before moving here at the age of almost 40. I didn't even know there was such a thing as a "dry" county. I was surprised to think it could mean anything at all when you could go two counties over and buy it legally. And more surprised that there were bootleggers here.
