JIM: Responds positively to Mr. Halsey commentary

More on the too little addressed and painfully serious issue of exploding carbonated beverage containers as it weighs in the upcoming local option election. Thus far, only the fearless duo, JIM and JON HALSEY, have sallied forth with facts on the matter

Jim writes:
Bot mot, Mr. Halsey, bon mot! I doff my hat to your wit, good Sir.

As a bit of grist for the mill, I'll mention that another popular carbonated drink of that era was named Dope Cola. As a matter of fact, an ad for that very product (bottled in Campbellsville, "W.H. Wilson, distributor for this section") appeared in the same edition of the News as did the dire concerns about the bubbly beverages. - Jim

Billy Joe Fudge: Mystery man who was Dad's Best Friend

The final say from the ultimate authority: Billy Joe Fudge confirms that all the guesses to date are correct: That is Maurice (some sent it as Morris) Lay with his dad, the late Ordell Fudge. And that inspires a wonderful story about the business affiliation Mr. Lay had with George Pelston, at the time a 14 year old mechanical engineering genius from Sparksville, the Capital City of the Great Wood South

Yes, for all those who sent answers, that is indeed Maurice Lay and My Dad, Ordell Fudge.

On another note, Maurice fussed and fussed to Dad about folks coming in all the time needing repair work on their bicycles. He, being the Chief Executive Officer of Western Auto's Columbia Kentucky Division claimed to have the expertise to do the repairs but, according to him, did not have the time.

Exploding containers just one of many dangers

Jon Halsey writes:
"Thank goodness those soft drinks never caught on. What carnage they might have wrought."

With tongue firmly planted in cheek, I would suggest that maybe, just maybe, a little time spent at the check out lanes of the local Discount Store or any of the area grocery stores would suggest that the consequences have not been so benign.

I am usually amazed when I see a cart loaded with cases of "pop" it often has a person of considerable girth at the helm. Given Kentucky's rating for Obesity related health issues it would seem that exploding containers was only one of the many dangers of these nefarious seducers of our Nation's youth and the weak-willed.

But thanks to "Jim" I now know the origen of the use of "pop" to describe soft drinks.

Danger lurking: the perils of drink

This artickle is presented with a a delicately-worded note to readers, warning them of the graphic content contained herein. Amazingly, none of the Facts presented in the issue of the day - to have Legal, Taxed Sales of Alcoholic Beverages or continue the Current Distribution System - has addressed this real issue: The danger of injury from exploding bottles of carbonated drinks, as so eloquently stated and reliably reported by the Adair County News on June 30, 1909.
Click on headline for revelations only the history sleuth JIM could uncover.

By JIM

A strongly worded editorial in the June 30, 1909 edition of the Adair County News came down hard on the danger of drink.

The piece opened by stating the prohibition movement had by then been on for several years and "the country is steadily drying." However (isn't there forever a "however" to suck the joy and sunshine?), that comment segued into a stern warning about the rise of another dangerous form of drink:

Cindy Harvey: Adair Co. needs to come into 21st Century

Personal Commentary: For: Will vote Yes on March 22, 2016.

Cindy Harvey writes:
I, too, agree with Amy Pike. I have read all the facts as they are right now, and have had an opinion about this for quite some time. I'm not much of a drinker but I would like to have the opportunity to buy alcohol should I choose to do so and not have to drive to another county to buy it. By staying "dry", Adair County is missing out on a tax base that I believe in the end will produce more construction jobs, fix the hospital and possibly bring in a good restaurant or two that will also bring jobs. What percentage of these crimes occurred in wet counties, and what percentage occurred in so called dry counties? Shannon Sexton: Teenage fatalities decreased with legalization

Personal Commentary

Shannon Sexton writes
In addition to my last comment: If you average 1995 - 2004 you will see an average of 18.1 teenage fatalities due to alcohol related collisions. If you average 2005-2014, you'll see a substantial decrease in that average to 9.8 teenage fatalities due to alcohol related collisions. Tom Chaney: These Are the Times That Try Men's Souls

Of Writers And Their Books: "These Are the Times That Try Men's Souls." Tom reviews David McCullough's book 1776 which tells the story of the year of our nation's birth when the fate of the emerging nation rested on the backs of George Washington and of troops whose enlistments seem to expire at inopportune times. "These Are the Times That Try Men's Souls"

The Fourth of July is the day we celebrate the approval of the Declaration of Independence. The haze of 200 plus years creates an aura around that event which obscures its context.

We forget the depth of the trouble in which the emerging alliance of thirteen colonies found itself in that year of 1776.
