Kelvin Bailey: Statistics should compare Wet to Dry areas

If it can't be shown that incidents of these negative results of alcohol consumption actually increase in 'wet' areas, than there's really no value in bringing them into this particular debate. - KELVIN BAILEY

By Kelvin Bailey,
Personal commentary

At this point, I have still not decided how (or if) I'll be voting in Adair County's upcoming wet/dry election.

As such, I am grateful for the ongoing robust discussion concerning the issue. I particulary appreciate when thoughts and opinions are girded with a good portion of research or statistics.

That being said, there is a particular error in these efforts I continue to see that should be noted. Statistics concerning alcohol use, alcohol related traffic deaths, domestic violence and alcohol, and the like are valid, but actually have limited relevance to this particular discussion unless the statistics or research shows how they might differ in areas in which alchohol sales are illegal.

If it can't be shown that incidents of these negative results of alcohol consumption actually increase in "wet" areas, than there's really no value in bringing them into this particular debate.

If statistics comparing wet and dry counties or areas exist, I think many of us would be interested in seeing them.

Maybe that could give me something to do while the snow has me stuck inside.

- Kelvin Bailey
