Celia Downey: the Rescue Squad was right there for me

By Celia Downey

Hello Ed, as a nurse of many years, I have always taken pride in having the ability to take care of myself, to be autonomous so to say. However, this snow storm has stretched my limits, requiring me to call on help to logistically go to work. To go to work . . . always taken for granted. The photo accompanying this article shows how heavily covered and long my drive way is. Although the main highways are pretty much ok, my driveway of about 300 feet or so is covered and frozen with about 17 inches of snow plus snow drifts.

I had to go to work Saturday morning so I called The Rescue Squad.

SOMERSET, KY (SUN 24 Jan 2016 at 11amCT/12pmET) - Interstate 75 and the Louie B. Nunn/Cumberland Parkway have been cleared but other major routes such as US 27, US 127, KY 80, and KY 90 are still the focus in our region.

Crews are reporting that these A priority routes are improving with partial to complete coverage in some locations. Salt is being applied to these routes and with the aid of the sunshine melting should occur creating slush covered routes making it easier for plow removal. All B and C priority routes still remain covered and some counties are beginning to treat B routes at this hour.

Thankfully it was one we only store equipment in and we don’t use often, and a lot of furniture and odd tools and a lot, we moved from our old home.

100 Years Ago: smallpox, smackdowns, scores, and other news

All sorts of news dotted the pages of the January 26, 1916 edition of the News.

By Jim

A lengthy piece attributed to J. Knox Hall, an outsider offering wholesome advice to the good folk of Adair County, occupied a full column and then some of the front page. Mr. Knox, bless his heart, heartily endorsed Mom, apple pie, and the American way, not to mention women's clubs, despite those organizations being eschewed by some. Mr. Hall, who fearlessly used several long sentences when but few words would have sufficed to a surplusage, took a lengthy paragraph to say what Ben Franklin succinctly stated as two brief axioms: "Early to bed and early to rise..." and "Pound-wise and penny foolish."

Tom Chaney: Possum Hunters and the Tobacco Trust

Of Writers And Their Books: Possum Hunters and the Tobacco Trust. Tom says that previously company buyers competed with each other, bidding on a farmer's tobacco crop either in the field or in the curing barn. Now the companies had divided the area so that only one company offered each farmer a price. This column first appeared 21 August 2005.
The next earlier Tom Chaney column: Night Rider: Idealism's Coil

By Tom Chaney

Possum Hunters and the Tobacco Trust

On September 24, 1904, one thousand tobacco farmers of the black patch met in Guthrie, Kentucky, to form the Dark Tobacco District Planter's Protective Association or PPA. Felix Ewing and Joel and Charles Fort were the organizers who spoke that day. Those farmers were protesting the low prices received for dark fired tobacco. That year they were being offered around three dollars per hundred-weight for their crop.

The price for tobacco was set by the tobacco trust under the leadership of James B. Duke and his American Tobacco Company who had led the effort to industrialize and monopolize the tobacco trade.
