Celia Downey: the Rescue Squad was right there for me

By Celia Downey

Hello Ed, as a nurse of many years, I have always taken pride in having the ability to take care of myself, to be autonomous so to say. However, this snow storm has stretched my limits, requiring me to call on help to logistically go to work. To go to work . . . always taken for granted. The photo accompanying this article shows how heavily covered and long my drive way is. Although the main highways are pretty much ok, my driveway of about 300 feet or so is covered and frozen with about 17 inches of snow plus snow drifts.

I had to go to work Saturday morning so I called The Rescue Squad.

The Squad was there and waiting at the asked-for time, but could not bring their vehicle down the drive, as we certainly would never get back out. So the Squad Staff helped me to walk the journey through snow drifts while carrying my work bag and after getting me up from a fall in the snow.

The Rescue Squad is an amazing and treasured resource for Adair County. One does not realize their value until one is face down in the snow and cannot get up to even walk.

The Rescue Squad Staff drove me to work's door and then back home, on time, safe, and warm.

The Rescue Squad Staff helped me to walk out of the long driveway to the main highway and then assisted with flashlight and all to walk back from the main highway to my door after work.

Today, the Dispatch Center hooked me up with a person who will grade the driveway so that I can actually drive the car to the main highway to go to work.

If I had snow shoes perhaps I would attempt to walk through the snow drifts in the driveway to reach the main highway, until the Spring thaw. But I do not have snow shoes, so Thank You to the Rescue Squad Staff mostly for helping me to walk to the main road and then taking me to work and back to home.

I encourage every person to donate to the Rescue Squad as you never know when you or someone that you care about may need their professional services.

Be Safe,
Celia
