ACJE Stephens Sends Statement on Conditions 21 Feb 2015

Flash flooding/ponding may make Adair Roads Hazardous

From the office of Adair Co. Judge Executive Micheal Lee Stephens:

After a winter weather briefing with the National Weather Service, we want to advise the residents of Adair County to expect mostly increasing rain conditions today and want to make you aware that we are now under a flood watch through midnight tonight.

We expect extreme amounts of standing water and "ponding" conditions on the roads, which could make them very dangerous. We are looking at rebounding temperatures for the next 36 hours and then possibly of below zero temperatures around Tuesday mornijng. Adair County residents should take extra precautions.

Once again, we need to be prepared for dangerous road conditions and plan ahead. We are asking that residents remain at home and off the roads as much as possible. If the weather event proceeds as predicted this could be, once again, a real challenge to the residents of Adair County and we ask that you take this weather warning very seriously.

We will update you as information becomes available to us. Please contact your magistrate for road clearing requests and they are working with our office and the road department for processing.

Please take time to check on all elderly family members, neighbors and all pets and farm animals. The shelter located in the basement of the annex building will remain open and for emergency assistance call 911. The Judge/Executive office telephone number is 270-384-4703.

Adair, Clinton, Cumberland, McCreary, Russell, Taylor, and Wayne Counties.

FRANKFORT, KY (Feb. 20, 2015) - What a week of weather we have had in the Commonwealth. No part of Kentucky was spared the record-breaking snow fall and temperatures this week. As schools, businesses and many government agencies had to close, so did the General Assembly due to the hazardous weather. However, the Senate made the decision to report to work on Thursday and Friday to do the people's work and help pass through legislation that would be in the best interest of our citizens.

Kentucky Color: Image in the Mountain

Click on headline for essay with photo

By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester
Kentucky Division of Forestry

Sometimes some of the most inspirational things in life are a result of the most mundane of tasks. Such as this image which appeared in one of the, small but nonetheless, mountains of snow which were created as a result of the shoveling of snow from my driveway.

I had observed a resemblance to the massive and awe inspiring East face of the Matterhorn, so I snapped a half dozen pictures of my Snow Mountain to see if anything developed, so to speak. Later, as I downloaded the pictures from my camera, from out of the blue this image appeared. Maybe your CM readers and my Kentucky Color followers would want to weigh in on their take on the Image in the Mountain.

Road Conditions Facing a New Threat: Flooding

Flooding, ice will both be issues for motorists. This advisory is for District 3, which includes Allen, Barren, Butler, Edmonson, Logan, Metcalfe, Monroe, Simpson, Todd, and Warren Counties, although extreme caution is advised for travelers in most areas of Kentucky today

By: Wes Watt, Public Information Officer
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, District 3

Bowling Green, Ky. (Feb. 21, 2015) -- District 3 motorists need to use extreme caution if they have to be out traveling today. Rising temperatures and heavy rain have created severe flooding across the district. Roads that still had some snow coverage can be very slick and provide little traction to drivers.

All roads in the district are subject to flooding and that includes Interstate 65. There are spots throughout I-65 that have severe flooding. Motorists traveling at highway speeds could run into a flooded area quickly. This creates a hazardous situation. Motorists are advised to significantly slow down and use the right lane on I-65. Motorists are advised to slow down on all other roads as well and navigate as best they can if they have to be out.

Crews are doing what they can to combat the flooding, but the options are limited. Flooding is expected to get worse as the day goes on.

I'm counting down to the Oscars. I haven't seen any of the movies, but I will watch as if I have. Hollywood holds a fascination for me that goes back to my childhood when I knew for sure I would one day be among the likes of Connie Stevens, Connie Francis and Annette Funicello.

I watched Robin Roberts' Countdown to the Oscars last week and agreed with her top fifteen even though my top fifteen would have been different. My fifteen are movies that I didn't want to end. I didn't want to go back to my real life. Here goes...

Governor Warns Kentuckians to Prepare for Freezing Rain, Ice

Emergency management recommends clearing storm sewers to prevent local flooding

By: Kerri Richardson, Terry Sebastian

FRANKFORT, Ky. - Another significant winter storm is headed for the Commonwealth, bringing a potentially dangerous mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain. Governor Steve Beshear warned Kentuckians to prepare for hazardous driving conditions, flash flooding or power outages.

"This weather system is changing as it approaches the state, so it's very important to monitor local weather forecasts for the latest outlook for your community," said Gov. Beshear. "As always, remember to check on your neighbors and the elderly, as ice creates especially hazardous conditions."

The storm will start as snow, transition to sleet and freezing rain before turning to heavy rain as temperatures warm on Saturday. Regions of the state will experience different impacts from this weather system. Forecasts are not finalized, and citizens are urged to continually monitor local weather forecast updates.
