Travel Advisory: Semi loses its load. NB I-65 reduced to one lane

Time to clear up estimated at 3+ Hours.

By Chris Jessie, Public Information Officer
KY Transportation Cabinet, District 3, Elizabethtown, KY

ELIZABETHTOWN, KY - (9:58amCT) I-65 Northbound is reduced to one lane between Sonora and Glendale at Mile Point 83. A semi has lost a load in the median and is also blocking the left lane. Traffic is backing up. Time to clear is estimated at 3+ hours.

With reduced traction due to icing and ponding of water conditions, we are particularly concerned as motorists slow down upon approach to the traffic queue.

Motorists are asked to please slow down well in advance. Driving the posted speed is still too fast for current weather conditions. This is in a construction zone, so responding to crashes is complicated and will require longer durations to clear. Even if crashes happen at low speeds with no injuries, the backup and effects along detour/alternate routes is extraordinary and hazardous for motorists on I65 and for local traffic.

No time is a good time for a crash to occur, but especially not under current conditions. Please always think of your safety and of others on the roadway. Slow down. Focus attention on operating your vehicle. Drive in a manner that does not limit your maneuverability:
  • Leave additional distance between surrounding vehicles.
  • Roads may appear wet. Water can become ice within a short distance - a distance with very little room to make an adjustment.
Updates will be sent as conditions warrant. - CHRIS JESSIE
