Nearly 100 at ACHS stepping up to be career ready

Seniors showing enthusiasm for program: 'Every senior we have spoken with has been willing to do whatever it takes to gain the most out of their high school career and be as prepared as they can for college and careers after high school." - Assistant Principal Travis Gay
Click on headline for complete story with photo(s)

From the Adair County School District

Nearly 100 ACHS students are "stepping up" to new challenges. The students have been working with counselors to change their schedules in an effort to become college and career ready. In several of these situations it has required seniors to take a more difficult class or add an additional class that will get them "career ready".

School Counselors Ann Young and Leslie Melton, along with Asst. Principal Travis Gay have been helping students understand how this change will help make them more competitive for jobs after graduation, simply by adjusting their schedules. Career path teacher Ms. Loretta Rainwater has also helped meet with students - often one-on-one.

Needs word on Messiah Sing Along from The Maestro

Culture & Enlightment
Comment inspired: Campbellsville U School of Music to perform 'Messiah'

Charles Marshburn writes:
The sing along held last year at Columbia Baptist Church was tremendous! I believe it drew a lot of good singers that a performance would not draw. Any word from the maestro? I really thought he was inspired to do an annual sing. - Charles Marshburn
Thanks: It is a question on the minds of many. It worries me, too. But I am trusting that when the time is right, The Maestro will appear, on high, high on the Hill of Lindsey Wilson, and make a pronouncement, and that all will be right, again, this Christmas in Columbia. Some folks will be making every Messiah in the neighborhood. - EW

Bargo Brann, Iconoclast: the Election 2014. Russell Co. style

Notes dearth of sheriff candidates in Columbia; plethora of same, Russell

Bargo Brann writes
Ed, I see that only four people have filed for Sheriff in Adair County. Next door in Russell County, no fewer than seven filed on the first day and Short Ways Bus Line has been running daily from Creelsboro to the Casey County line, from Happy Acre to Helm's landing, from Royville to Rowena and from many other points, hauling more candidates to Jimtown to file for the right to tote a hogleg and drive around in a bubblegum machine. Respectfully yrs, Bargo
Thanks, Bargo - CM welcomes your cagy comment. We take it, with a name like Bargo, you are from Esto? Just wondering. Anyway, your letter is as faithful to The County as a Chief Pontiac hood ornament. Thanks. - CM

Election 2014: Two big announcements anticipated

By Ed Waggener

Election coverage is now pretty standard. Candidates announce and we post every day (or so). Yesterday, a candidate for Mayor, June Parson, filed. Whether she is challenged will be a question from now until August 12, 2014, the filing deadline for city offices.

Odds are heavily in favor of two items of major speculation happening: 1) Joe Rogers is talking like a candidate for County Judge Executive, more and more. I got the impression last night that he will run, setting up a Democratic Primary. Mike Stephens has already filed for the nomination. And 2) Another major candidate for County Court Clerk will announce, but he plans to resign his current job at the end of the year and devote full time to his candidacy. All we can say until he says differently is: He's a Republican. - EW
