Special Election Certain
Valid Recall Signatures 807, well past the 755 need!

By Ed Waggener

It hasn't been a strong showing for the tax recall petition, but it now appears it has been sufficient and that it will be certified by Adair County Court Clerk Sheila Blair.

Deputy Clerk Melissa Fletcher said at 6:24pmCT, Tuesday night, November 3, 2009, that the the number of validated signatures is 807, 52 more than required for certification.

The 807 came with validation of signatures for 14 precincts.

The Adair County School Board, at its October 29, 2009, meeting, voted unanimously to put the matter to a vote if the recall petition should prove successful.

The board members have promised a vigorous campaign on behalf of the school kids of Adair County.

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson College President William T. Luckey Jr. has been named to a federal advisory panel that helps shape U.S. student financial aid policy.

Luckey has been named to the Student Financial Aid Advisory Committee, an 11-member Congressional committee charged with advising Congress and the U.S. Department of Education on student financial aid policy.

As President of Lindsey Wilson College, William T. Luckey Jr. has proven to be a dedicated leader, and I have no doubt he will continue to serve with distinction on the Student Financial Aid Advisory Committee, said Kentucky U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, who recommended Luckey for the position.

COF: Miss Patty, and her long suffering teachers, need new facility

"Anyone who is agin a new building should hang their head in shame," COF says, but he says it doesn't need the whoop-de-doos that will be justified as necessary, such as a state of the art gymnasium
About: Col. Wm. Casey School is in dire need of replacement

The COF, Hiding out at Dun Roman

Miss Patty and her long-suffering teachers are surely to be commended for the job they do under such trying circumstances and I agree with Mr McCammish and others who have opined.

We definitely need new facilities but just the same I can't help but thinking t'wasn't that long ago when the elementary schools had no air conditioning but did have winders that propped up.

Grandmother had faith, was right: son did return from war

About: Great turnout for Veterans Program at ACPL

By E.H. Lepiarczyk II

I really enjoyed attending the veterans' program Monday evening at the library. It was good to meet with so many patriotic Adair Countians!

I would like to share some memories of my grandmother, the late Effie Burton Grider. My grandmother was always proud of my grandfather, the late Daniel Marion Grider's services to our country during what she called the great world's war, namely World War I.

Tribute reminds writer of her angel friend, Phyllis Loy

About: Remembering Kathy Grant: A true friend Poem by Diana Long

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

One of God's greatest blessings are those rare individuals we can call a true friend. I was moved by this beautiful poem. It reminded me of my "angel" friend whom I lost last year, Phyllis Loy.

I still miss her so much, but more importantly, I have grown to be even more thankful for her love and friendship. I'm so glad that I didn't miss out on that in my life. Tell your friends that you love them, be there for them and most of all, be one.

Money is wasted in CWC's inefficient heating, cooling system

About: Col Wm Casey School is in dire need of replacement

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

The first thing that struck me about Patty Jones' article about CWC is what we are paying now for a very inefficient heating and cooling system, the daily maintenance activities, and the time managing all the systems and computers and other instructional tools because of the poor utilities. All these expenses are not going toward educating county children better.

Just think if we had a new school designed to use power efficiently and weren't having to heat and cool parts of the building at the same time to be able to teach. Just think if we had a new school with adequate power in the classrooms to allow more PCs. Just think if we could use all that wasted cost to educate kids better.

The Election of 1909 was colorful event

100 years ago, there was an election which swept all incumbents from office. A powerful Adair County leader was denied even the backing of his home county because zealot temperance leaders labeled him soft of whisky power in Kentucky. Some took defeats in stride, but not Fred McLean, who fired off a scathing salvo taking himself out of future races, vowing he'd labor for 50 cents a day rather than beg the public for an office again. Republican losers in the primary ran in the fall as Independent Republicans weakening the Republican slate
"Mountains tower proudest
Thunder peals the loudest,
The landscape is the grandest, and
Politics, the damnedest
In Kentucky

Judge J.H. Mulligan, from "In Kentucky" (1902)
By "Jim"

This (non) election day in Adair County is considerably quieter than was election day, 1909. With a Republican primary in the spring and 14 countywide races that fall, you couldn't cut down a three- inch sapling without at least two candidates showing up to make stump speeches. The Republicans fielded candidates in all 14 contests, while the Democrats vied for four positions, as did the Independent Republicans

Kentucky Color: Sugar Maple leaves have wide color variation

Genetic diversity may account for wide variation in leaf color; hybridization is another answer. Beautiful in all seasons, the Sugar Maple is an important timber, food, and shade resource
Next earlier Kentucky Color essay: Southern Red Oaks

By Billy Joe Fudge, President, Homeplace on Green River, Inc.

Sugar Maple is the second most shade tolerant timber tree in North America behind only American Beech. It can live and grow very slowly for years in the shade of other trees surviving on only indirect, filtered sunlight just waiting for its opportunity to reach for the sun.

LWC Choral Ensembles deliver outstanding performance

"The evening was a totally awesome experience for those who attended, and the only disappointing aspect of the performance was its brevity. It was so long coming and too soon finished."

Dr. Gerald Chafin has brought the Lindsey Wilson Choral Ensembles to a new high.

This writer had the most enjoyable experience on Monday evening that could possibly have been had in Columbia. The location was The Columbia Baptist Church and the occasion was the fall recital which was expertly presented by the LWC Choral concert choir and the Lindsey Wilson Singers.
