2017-03-01 - Taylor County, KY - Photo by Robert Ellis (c) .
Robert Ellis writes: Sun setting on the original Tebbs Bend Bridge. A fitting retirement for a historical icon. My guess is that while it was in its original location over Green River it was never able to offer such views. This has changed due to the higher elevation and positioning at its new location.

Geniece Leftwich Marcum, Metcalfe Co. native, (1929-2017)

Geniece's perfect day began with an exactly right sized cup of black-as-night coffee and a hot buttered biscuit, maybe two, depending on how the day was sizing up. She loved animals and demanded they all be treated gently and with respect. Her favorites were horses, especially Cherokee, and dogs, especially Poodelle. She loved life, family, friends, flowers, sparkly jewelry, fashion, reading, creative writing and taking pictures. Librarian Laska Martin once said of the young teen that she thought Geniece had read every book in the Edmonton Library.

Geniece Leftwich Marcum passed away at TJ Samson Hospital, Glasgow, KY, just before noon on Tuesday, February 28, 2017. Her daughters were on either side of her hospital bed as she took her last breaths roughly 24 hours after having been struck by a massive brain hemorrhage.

Visitation will begin at 12 noonCT on Friday, March 3, 2017 at Butler Funeral Home, 201 East Street, Edmonton, KY. Her funeral service will begin at 3:30pmCT with burial to take place immediately following the service. Sycamore Springs: Shrove Tuesday was Donut Day

Day before Lent was big blow out to indulge in the sweets her big family would give up for Lent. The writer has wonderful memories of that tradition: 'I can still see the dining room table covered in tablecloths and donuts, the slightly out of shape golden brown oval rings of care my Mother made, smothered in glaze, a cup of freshly made coffee in a White Castle coffee mug tempered with a touch of milk. Yes, today was Donut Day.'

Growing up Catholic, we were taught to give something up for Lent. Sweets were usually the main thing adults tried to sway us into giving up. Tradition in my family was "Donut Day" aka Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent started was our big blow out!
