Sgt. York in Adair County: He stopped by Yank Loy store often

Yank Loy described the hero from Pall Mall as 'a fine fellow." Writer remembers stories her father told her about Sgt. York stopping in Sparksville often around 1950-51, on his way, she thinks, to a stockyard. She wonders if there was a stockyard in Columbia at that time.

By Donita Loy-Hortillosa

I noticed several postings about Alvin York and it reminded me of something my dad, James, aka Yank Loy, once told me. It seems that in the early days after my dad opened his store in Sparksville, sometime around 1950 or 51, I assume.

Funeral processions: What's the law on the open highway

Marsha Walker writes:

I did some research on traffic laws regarding funeral processions. I found that funeral processions have the right of way when preceded by a vehicle with a flashing light. I want to know what to do when meeting a funeral procession on a two-lane highway, but didn't find the answer. It seems to me that on the highway it could sometimes be dangerous to stop when the funeral procession is travelling in the opposite direction. Does anyone know the law? --Marsha Walker

Drivers showing courtesy (or lack of it)

Betty Coop writes:

On Wednesday of this week I observed a lack of respect and courtesy while driving on North 55, Columbia, KY. Around the area of the Dollar General store, I met a funeral procession. As I stopped for the procession, in my rear view mirror I noticed a small sports car approching at a fast pace. I hoped the driver would realize the situation and stop. The driver stopped for about 30 seconds and then pulled around me and sped on down the road. It saddened me and made me angry to see such a lack of respect. Betty Coop

Comment: Don't confuse courteous with dangerous

Barbara J Armitage writes:
Don't confuse courteous with dangerous.

A couple of days ago I left Tucker's Station Farms driving up Bull Run Road towards town. In less than a mile I met three pick up trucks - one truck in each of the blind spots on Bull Run.

Each of the trucks coming at me in my lane - head on around a blind corner or over the top of a hill.

One of the drivers did wave at me and I appreciate his friendliness but I\'d feel better if he waved from his own lane. - Barbara J Armitage

Letter: Held Local Prayer Service During JFK Funeral

Paul Patton writes:
... I was a young pastor, fresh out of college, and engaged in my first full time ministry at First Christian Church in Junction City, KY. My office was in a small building behind the church parsonage and I was printing the weekly church bulletin on an old mimeograph machine.

I had neither radio or television in my office and was unaware of what was happening in Dallas until my wife, Carol, rushed to my office to tell me JFK had been shot. I dropped to my knees and prayed for the stricken president. Prayer ended, I went to the parsonage so I could keep up with the news and soon learned that our president had died. It was truly a sad day for the United States of America.

At the hour of the funeral in Washington D. C., we held a prayer service at the church. As I recall the service was well attended by a group of grieving Americans. --Paul Patton

Letter: Agrees with Joyce

Lois Cunningham writes:
I have to agree with Joyce... I have never seen speeders on the square no matter what day or time of day it is. Actually it is almost impossible to speed on the square. We all have to come off on one of four streets to get on the square and exit on other one, unless you are going around and around like a merry go round.... How can you speed in such a short distance ??

If you want to see speeders go out 80, or 206, or 55 at the edge of town and you will find plenty of speeders hurrying in or out of Columbia, but not on the square. --Lois Cunningham

Where were you when JFK died? George Rice's story

'We were living on the river farm which is now Green River Lake and stripping tobacco in a barn that now would be in the second parking lot of Holmes Bend Marina . . . Charles Barnes . . . told us our President had been shot.' - GEORGE RICE

By George Rice

Great story by Ralph and the journey in a V.W. to Arlington cemetery.

I wonder if those four young men were pressed in various shapes as sardines from a can when they exited from that Volkswagen.

I think everyone living in that era of time remembers when and where they were when the terrible news reached us.

We were living on the river farm which is now Green River Lake and stripping tobacco in a barn that now would be in the second parking lot of Holmes Bend marina.

Mr. Charles Barns make an appearance promoting Moorman feed that he said was the best feed ever invented and told us as he was coming over the hill that it was announced on the radio that OUR PRESIDENT had been shot. It was difficult to believe because that was Our President and that just couldn\'t happen in our time. --George Rice

George Rice: Sees nothing but courteous drivers here

George Rice writes:
Maybe Joyce Coomer and I could get together and set up some watch out stations for these speeding vehicles. I wouldn't know where to watch as I'm all over town many days and see nothing but courteous drivers. Somehow I feel strongly that Columbia is a safe and friendly town to be in.

Today I made numerous trips around town and observed numerous drivers stopping for pedestrians and to let cars out of busy side roads. Or could it be that I am one of those speeding drivers and just don't know it. But If I am why do all those others vehicles keep accumulating following behind me up Butler's branch on Hwy 551 coming into Columbia. - George Rice
