Sgt. York in Adair County: He stopped by Yank Loy store often Yank Loy described the hero from Pall Mall as 'a fine fellow." Writer remembers stories her father told her about Sgt. York stopping in Sparksville often around 1950-51, on his way, she thinks, to a stockyard. She wonders if there was a stockyard in Columbia at that time. By Donita Loy-Hortillosa I noticed several postings about Alvin York and it reminded me of something my dad, James, aka Yank Loy, once told me. It seems that in the early days after my dad opened his store in Sparksville, sometime around 1950 or 51, I assume. Sgt. York stopped by often. My dad spoke fondly of Sgt. York and to quote Dad's description, he was "a fine fellow." He also described him as a cattleman, which leads me to a question. Was there a stockyard in Columbia during that time? I thought my dad said he would stop by on his way to Columbia to a stockyard, but I am not sure. Dad visited Sgt. York's grave several times and was upset after one visit in the 80\'s that someone had removed the picture from his marker. - Donita Loy-Hortillosa Comments relative to: Lee Murphy: A visit to Pall Mall on Veterans Day.
