Kentucky Color - Red bud update

Click on headline for essay with photo(s)

By Billy Joe Fudge
Retired District Forester, KY Division of Forestry

What a difference a little late frost can make and because of it, the contrast between Red bud bean pods and heart shaped leaves has never been greater.

Normally, Red bud has many more leaves which tend to obscure our view of the bean pods but this year just take a look see at Red bud and you will notice the enhanced contrast.

There is so much beauty surrounding us all. We just need to make a conscious effort to slow down, soak it in and experience the joy. - Billy Joe Fudge

Laments the passing of a great tree landmark

Joyce Coomer writes:
Another Columbia landmark gone - the glorious hemlock on the corner of Tutt Street and Burkesville Street. The maple is nearly gone and I'm sure the other hemlock will be gone by the end of the day (Wednesday, May 9, 2012). It is so sad to see these wonderful trees destroyed - pieces of the earth's soul gone forever. - Joyce Coomer
Thanks, Joyce Coomer. For noting an old friend's passing - for the record. Trees do sometimes have to be removed, but around town, trees are taking a greater hit than they ought to. Perhaps the time has come for Billy Joe Fudge's plan to have a urban tree inventory to become a reality. The shade slips away so slowly - without replenishment. -EW
