Laments the passing of a great tree landmark

Joyce Coomer writes:
Another Columbia landmark gone - the glorious hemlock on the corner of Tutt Street and Burkesville Street. The maple is nearly gone and I'm sure the other hemlock will be gone by the end of the day (Wednesday, May 9, 2012). It is so sad to see these wonderful trees destroyed - pieces of the earth's soul gone forever. - Joyce Coomer
Thanks, Joyce Coomer. For noting an old friend's passing - for the record. Trees do sometimes have to be removed, but around town, trees are taking a greater hit than they ought to. Perhaps the time has come for Billy Joe Fudge's plan to have a urban tree inventory to become a reality. The shade slips away so slowly - without replenishment. -EW

Favorite Old Postcard: Tree lined Burkesville ST, Columbia, KY

2012-05-07 - 200 block of Burkesville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo from collection of Dr. James Callison.
The Courthouse Clocktower
can be faintly made out in this scene looking north on Burkesville Street, in the days when pedestrians were shaded and protected by a line of trees, and by the self limiting speed of the automobiles. The street was wide enough to carry all the traffic of today, and there was on street parking for motorist convenience and even more protection for pedestrians. The postcard was submitted by Jim Richards, after Dr. Callison - who graduated from Columbia High School and grew up just one block from the scene on East Guardian Street - sent it to Richards with a note that Western Kentucky University, Dr. Callison's alma mater, had played the University of Kentucky to its closest margin en route to the UK NCAA title in 2012. Clicking on ReadMore accesses a lament for the passing of a tree, to emphasize that desert-like expanses like the Burkesville Street Speedway come about losing one tree at a time. -EW
