SCC Photography club announces contest winners Earth Day 2012: Winners include photographers from Columbia, Russell Springs, and from Somerset: Laura Martin, Matthew Shirley, Dominique Jones, and Donna Tucker Click on headline for story with photo(s) By Allison Horseman News from Somerset Community College Somerset Community College's Fruit of the Lens photography club recently sponsored a spring photography contest. The 2012 contest was themed "Nature's Renewal" and saw 35 entries. The contest is held in conjunction with the college's Earth Day Celebration that was held Sunday, April 22 at SCC's Somerset Campus. Winning photographers were recognized that day and awards and certificates were presented. SCC's PRIDE Club donated cash awards for the winning images. The winners: - First place: "American Toad," by Laura Martin of Pulaski County, Ky. ($50 and certificate)Martin, who took home the first place award, said getting the perfect shot proved to be quite a challenge. "My family and I took John, my twelve-year-old brother, fishing. Since my sister Christy and I didn't have fishing licenses yet we just had fun with our cameras. We found a nice spot on a large flat rock right out in the water, near a tall bridge. We saw the toads swimming down river toward us, and I tried a couple times to get a photo of them, but at first they kept floating downstream a few feet at a time because they were afraid of me" said Martin. "When they stopped on the rock, I slowly scooted along the rock eye level with them to get a picture of these little guys, but very slowly so that I didn't scare them with my camera. I was able to get remarkably close. They stayed there for a long time, apparently having decided that I was no threat to them." Martin's photo of an American Toad was taken in McCreary County at Alum Ford on the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River on the afternoon of March 31, 2012. Using a Sony DSC H5 camera on macro focus she managed to get the soft focus of the background she desired while getting her subject in focus. Laura has been a photographer since she was old enough to hold a camera. The Fruit of the Lens Photography Club sponsored the contest. The club was created to provide a setting where SCC students, staff and faculty can come together with the community to share digital images and discuss photography. Allison M.
