Margaret Downs was a very special woman

Kim Downs writes:
That town mother mentioned in your article today is my husband's grandmother, Margaret Downs. She worked at Ben Franklin's from the mid 50's until it closed in the 70's. She is the mother of Mike Downs, grandmother of Chris and Josh Downs and the great grandmother of Easton, Grayson, and McKenna Downs ,all of Columbia. We are the only Downs family in Columbia. Her husband, Bill Downs owned the local printing shop.

Great to hear that she was a part of one of your special memories as a child, because she was a very special lady to us as well! Sincerely,-KIM DOWNS

It was a comfort, just knowing RMH there if needed

'In 2009, my husband and I left Taylor County Hospital with the clothes on our backs heading to Lexington. Jayden's heartbeat was dropping and he would be a month early. When we got to Lexington, he was born the next day. He had trouble with his sugar, so we weren't sure if he would be able to come home when I did. Thankfully, I was a little more lucky than the King Family was and never had to use the Ronald McDonald House, but it was very close. I felt comfortable knowing that it was there in case I did need it." -JAMIE ISABELLE

I also would like to encourage everyone to help the Ronald McDonald house.

Downtown days show difference volunteers make

Accolades for Downtown Days, but editor of Columbia's most influential newspaper, IT'S JUST FOR A SMILE NEWS, suggests greater scrutiny of what was achieved, what it cost, and what real benefits to local businesses were achieved before too many Self-Congratulations are heaped by the Self-Congratulationists on themselves.
And for those who want dessert before their meal, go straight to Ralph Waggener's PS, in which the writer straight up endorses going wet as just Good Common Sense

A guest editorial written with unCommon Sense

The Downtown day's celebration was a big success again. Being out of town, I'll need to take brother Ed Waggener's opinion as written in Columbia Magazine.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Softer Edges, a sonnet

Softer edges
-a sonnet title suggested by Timothy Frank Spruill
I asked what sort of thought today's should be
and loving friend said, one with softer edges.
How easy cutting words leave amputee
and careless thoughts direct to thorny hedges.

I pled again my innocent request
and still refuse description as a stalker.
How often one discouraged webgroup guest
unthinking shouts desire as last chance hawker.

I question still my own sincere intent
and change for good, for bad with changing seasons.
How seldom overloving help repents,
more likely to be stating faulty reasons

.Look always for the best in others' actions,
refusing to be caught in all distractions.

- Robert Stone, 16 October 2011

Favors putting wet/dry issue to a vote

Kristy Keene writes:
I personally see nothing wrong with Adair County becoming a "wet" county. The fact that it could bring in new businesses to our county is a major plus. And I have to point out that if someone chooses to drive while drunk, they are going to do it whether they bought the alcohol here or not. Actually it seems like there is a better chance of them drinking on the road since it's a 45 minute trip to get some beer. We all could debate this until we are blue in the face, but the fact is we should have the choice to vote on whether we want this or not. -KRISTY KEENE

Ever so often, a completely anonymous writer deserves attention

This is a provocative item, from one who stands four-square with the wets. We're censoring some of the naughtier words. (Couldn't decide on 'Crapola'.) It's posted even though it's anonymous because there are elements in what she/he has to say which are relevant to some current issues facing Columbia/Adair County today. Perhaps there some changes for the better here, perhaps not. You'd have to decide. If you remember this one concept, it is that there is no improvement except in change - though that comes only when principled integrity is used by those who remember that they can do their jobs only when they don't do things to keep their jobs. -CM

From Out of State, from Anonymous

I'm not sure which amuses - and (censored. CM) me off the most: the dimwitted stiffnecks who know in their heart of hearts and soul of souls that going legally wet is the end of civilization as we know it and that it's a certain road to purgatory (or worse) for anyone within, oh, say, a 75 mile radius), or the pie-in-the-the-sky nimrods who are equally convinced that going legally wet is the answer to more questions than a smart man can think up in a day's worth of skull sweat.

CAROL PERKINS: Football for tots

With the wisdom only a grandparent has about properly raising their kids' Carol Perkins has written a masterpiece on the dangerous practice of parents succumbing to peer pressure: She advised flag football for her five-year-old grandson, which was, at first rejected: I asked several local coaches their opinions and I could not find one person who thought a five year old was physically and emotionally ready to tackle. Naturally, I had to mention my discovery to Carla. 'But Mom, around here they start early, and if your child doesn't start with others, they will be behind.' Behind whom? The Titans? What a trap for parents to be drawn into by organizations who tap into their emotional side. My theory is that the best way to ruin a good athlete is to burn him out.
The next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: The measure of a man

By Caorl Perkins

"Tell CiCi what you're going to be playing next week," said the assistant coach and father of my grandson.

"Football," replied five-year-old Joseph as he transformed his transformer.

"Go get your helmet and pads to show her." I think if Mark (the father) could have tried them on, he would have. Football players never die; they coach their sons.

The writer, Brandon Thompson, is sales manager for radio station WAIN, Columbia, KY and is now leading a well-received Dave Ramsey class in Columbia. We thank Brandon Thompson for his advice and counsel and for taking the time to share his philosophy of journalistic standards. -EW

Brandon Thompson writes:
Ed, I messaged you earlier about the wet/dry issue. I've not seen it on the site. All I see are pro-alcohol sales comments. Are you censoring your site now to only include view points you agree with? Just wondering. Thanks.-BRANDON THOMPSON.
Thanks, Brandon Thompson. No. We're not censoring your letter (though we have every right to do so with a privately owned media). We are controlling the traffic and refereeing to maintain Civil Discourse, which is our right under the American Free Enterprise system, I thought. Just remember this: We aren't Bolsheviks. This is America, after all.

Actually, the preponderance of mail we've received is pro-legal, controlled sales of alcoholic beverages, but only a vote will tell when the inevitable will happen.

JIM: The Pride of the Town

One of America's great icons is the Joe Moore drawing of the Adair County Courthouse Clocktower. From its beginnings, as this story by Jim shows, the now Historic Adair County Courthouse has been a revered physical symbol of the center of the universe for Adair Countians everywhere. Jim has found another gem from the chronicles, this one by John Ed Murrell in 1922, which seems even more relevant for today than when it was written. Regular readers of CM will find insights and parallels to today's Columbia/Adair County, and will, no doubt join with all of us who are authentic Conservatives (it's a good word, even if rascally Radicals have done a pretty good job misdefining it - got to hand it to the DoubleSpeaksmiths) among us in preserving it and continuing the higher values in our marginally and metrically unique local society. The story is a reminder that these ideals which are the soul of Columbia/Adair County have held sway only at times, as in 1922, and that there has always been a struggle between what makes us Great and what pulls us down. Today, the Idealists and the authentic Conservatives seem to be winning. But on to this JIM masterpiece. -EW

By JIM

John Ed Murrell breathed fire on the front page of the News in September, 1922. Under the headline "Nothing Like Beautifying," he wrote:

People about Columbia beautify their lawns with flowers and keep the grass green, which shows that cultivated families reside in the residences, whether they be large or small...A home that is well kept on the outside makes it more valuable and more desirable.

CM let a lot of people down on CM's part of the caption description, assuming everyone would know where it is in relation to some buildings which are no longer there, lots where buildings hadn't been built, and buildings and stores which have dramatically changed, including the courthouse. The courthouse wings or additions have been added and would have been visible in the left of the picture were it taken today. -ED WAGGENER

Letter: Some semis will always be needed on the Square

Comments re article 47574 Two lanes of traffic will no longer be needed on SquareMark Hale writes:
We will still need room for semi trucks on the square unless every business which gets deliveries on the square from semis plans to meet them out on the bypass to get their stuff. Also businesses just off the square which get semi deliveries will need to be able to get them as well. Sorry, but those blasted semis will still have to access the Square at times. We could just outlaw semis all together after all if we need something we just go to the store and get it anyway right. LOL. - MARK HALE
Note: Your message exactly coincides with what Billy Joe Fudge said, at least the way I read it. He was saying that part of the reason for needing two lanes - confusing to drivers, very, very, dangerous to pedestrians - has been to allow semi's room to get around the Square without hitting the courthouse. Those who work on the Square know that is a frequent occurence. As for truck driving, that profession is a backbone of the economy calling in Adair County. At CM, we think there ought to be law requiring at least U.S. Cabinet post specifically for truck drivers. We're convinced the last person to sign off on a road project would be a Truck Driver with a CDL. -EW
