The Baby Robins have been lost - maybe to predators

Tiny birds plight had won the hearts of caring individuals, became symbol of a cause

By Barbara Armitage

There is sad news to report from the Square this afternoon. It appears that three innocent souls have been lost in Columbia.

So many of you came together in support of the three little baby robins that were tragically left homeless last Friday. Your kindness did not go unnoticed.

Charlie Sparks Funeral: Town united to give sad farewell

Carol Miller writes:
I would like to let everyone know how special this city of Columbia is. Working the funeral dinner it was amazing the amount of food, support and prayers that were offered to his family. This town came together and put on a meal that probably will never be matched. What a wonderful place this is to know that everyone in this town joined together and said good-bye to someone who loved his home town and gave his life protecting it. Way to go, Columbia! It is wonderful to belong to a community which cares so much. -Carol MIller

JIM: The mystery of Columbia's Vanished Silent City

The lost Columbia city cemetery: References are made, and clues have been found for this original city cemetery. Historian "Jim" hopes some skilled history detective can pinpoint the actual location of this Vanished Silent City,

By "JIM"

In the course of researching in the Adair County News for the years 1900-1922, a handful of references to Columbia's first - and now forgotten - city cemetery have come to light.

Almost certainly, all the snippets below were penned by long time Columbia resident and News man J.E. Murrell. The date preceding each entry indicates the edition of the paper in which the item appeared.

Can anyone help pinpoint the location of this now vanished silent city?

(March 17, 1909)
There are but few people in Columbia who know where the first city cemetery was located. It was on a hill to the left of the residence of Mr. Geo. A. Smith. A great many of the first settlers of Columbia and their descendants were buried there and for many years after the present one was located a good fence stood around the old one. The writer can remember when many tombstones stood in the lot, giving the names of the deceased. There are no signs of a cemetery now, the ground having been in cultivation for thirty years.

(Dec. 1, 1918)
[W]e venture the assertion that there are but few people in Columbia who know where the first cemetery of the town was located. It was on a hill where Mr. Geo. A. Smith now lives. The writer remembers when many of the headstones could be plainly read. Thirty years or more ago it was plowed over and today there is not a sign of a grave... and we doubt if there is a single person who lives in Columbia now, who can name any of the departed whose bones rest in this old graveyard.

(In 1920, Mr. Smith and his 2nd wife, Rebecca, lived on Greensburg St. near the Dr. C.M. Russell family and the Mrs. Nancy J. Flowers family. Another 1921 article, this one unrelated to the cemetery, referred to "the cliff just beyond where Mr. Geo. A. Smith now resides.")

(Feb. 23, 1921)
Do you know...That the first cemetery in Columbia was on the hill above and to the left of the residence of Mr. Geo. A. Smith?

(Jan. 31, 1922)
Do you remember...When Johnny Sanders taught school in the cemetery which stood where Fred Hill's residence is located?

Perplexing puzzle composed by otherwise unprovocative historian, the gentle "Jim", whose humble, peaceful ways generally dampen any impulse to steer up restless inquiry, but this vexing issue is weighing heavy on his heart. Please help. -ED

Melewi wants to know if chain saw training is for public?

Writer responds to paragraph in Adair County Fiscal Court Report, July 12, 2011 meeting wherein her honor, CJE Ann Melton, made reference to a regional two-day Chainsaw Safety Seminar to be held in Columbia, KY.

Melewi writes:
Is the chain saw training just for the county road department or is it open to the public? Inquiring minds want to know. - Melewi
You came to the right place, to CM. We called Lisa Lee at CJE Ann Melton's office and found out that the class is open to the public, but is limited to about 40 people. The tuition is $75 per person. Lisa Lee said that it is her understanding that two lunches will be catered and that snacks will be provided. Day One will start in the air conditioned basement of the Beautiful Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY. Day Two will be in the a more rustic setting, on the County Property by the Adair Search & Rescue Building (address is currently being established by Adair 911 Mapping and Addressing Coordinator Justin Bailey, and Mayor Mark D. Harris of the City of Columbia, KY). For more information, call (270) 384-4703 to speak with Lisa Lee. -Ed Waggener

Saturday hours work for another Farmers Market devotee

Kathy Powell writes:
I love all our local farmers markets, also. We go to the square in Glasgow every Sat. for the Bounty of the Barrens farmers market. We get milk, cheese, bison, they have wonderful local crafts, restaurants and great music is always playing.

Now with Adair's market being open on Saturday. it makes it even better for my family. Having the choice of fresh, healthy local food and supporting our local farmers here in Kentucky is important to our family.

Eat fresh and local, improve your health, support our farmers! Last winter there was a indoor winter Bounty of the Barrens farmers market once a month. I do hope it continues. --Kathy Powell

I work at Tractor Supply, 817 Jamestown ST (MAP)Columbia, KY 42728, Phone (270) 385-9020, and someone inadvertantly left their cane hanging on one of our shelves last night. It is quite unique - black, with a creature with blue eyes and a marble in its mouth as the handle. It is also decorated down the shaft with carvings painted white. It is at Tractor Supply at the checkout. Our hours are 8am-8pmCT. I will be there from 8am to 4pmCT tomorrow, July 13, 2011. I'm sure someone is looking for this unique piece of art.
