The Baby Robins have been lost - maybe to predators Tiny birds plight had won the hearts of caring individuals, became symbol of a cause By Barbara Armitage There is sad news to report from the Square this afternoon. It appears that three innocent souls have been lost in Columbia. So many of you came together in support of the three little baby robins that were tragically left homeless last Friday. Your kindness did not go unnoticed. The baby birds were left to die after the nest they called home was knocked from the Red Bud tree on the Square during an unfortunate "hat racking" incident. Although a rescue mission was immediately put into place, the nest relocated in the tree and the baby birds returned to their home by Mother Melewi nothing could be done to replace the protective branches of the tree. Apparently predators have taken advantage of the vulnerability of the nest - all three baby birds are gone. Several concerned citizens have asked about the possibility of the mother bird moving the babies. Unlike earth bound mammals it is not possible for the mother bird to move her young to a safe location - she can't fly carrying the baby birds. If you are planning a change in your landscape during nesting seasons please take the time to inspect your trees and shrubs before pruning. Remember that not all Adair Countians are of the two legged variety. It's important that we look out for each other. -Barbara Armitage This story was posted on 2011-07-13 20:10:56
