Concurrence from 3 experts: It's a Dobsonfly

Three experts have identified the insect in the photo sent by Sharon Whitehurst as a Dobson Fly.
  • Wendy Butler Burt (2011-07-02/8:07amCT):"This is a Dobsonfly which, according to the Peterson Field Guide to the Insects, is a 'large soft-bodied insect with a rather fluttery flight; generally found near streams.' Fishermen may be more familiar Dobsonfly larvae, or hellgrammites, which are excellent bait for smallmouth bass and other fish."
  • Tim Duncan (2011-07-02/7:52amCT): "Hello. That would be a female eastern dobson fly. The male of the species would have larger pincers. They are also called King Bugs. The larvae of these insects make excellant bait for Redeyes. The larvae are called Hellegrammites. I would think most people around here who have played in a creek and flipped over rocks has seen these at one time or the other."
  • Lance Bean (2011-07-02/7:51amCT): "The insect is a Dobsonfly which comes from the Helgrammite larval. Hellgramittes are very good fish bait."
