A great example that timing IS everything. I received a forwarding from Jim Beard this morning. It identified conditions in the USA 100 years ago. I then compared it to Knifley of thelate thirties/early forties.

A STORY BOARD accompanied by hundreds of photos of a five and one-half year long life which touched more hearts than most lives ever do in three score and ten, has been arranged in the vestibule of the assembly hall at the South Kentucky Associational Camp Ground in Russell Springs, where Master Walker Aaron Smith lies in repose. The yellow sash in the wreath says, "Thank heaven for Walker." Visitation started at 3:00pm this afternoon in the hall; services will be at the same place at 1:00pm CT, Wednesday, January 3, 2006.

CPD arrest 2 adults, 1 juvenile in afternoon drug bust


  • Byron Caldwell and Randall Denton lodged in Adair County Regional Jail
  • juvenile lodged in Adair County Youth Development Center
  • Columbia Police expect more arrests as investigation continues

Officers of Columbia Police Department (CPD) executed two search warrants this afternoon at 3:45pm CT, Tuesday, January 2, 2006, arresting two adults and and one juvenile and confiscating drugs, money, and paraphernalia.

In the course of the search the officers confiscated crack cocaine with a street value of about $1,000, according to police, an undetermined amount of cash, and drug paraphernalia.

Columbia, Dunnville drivers injured In US 127 accident

One airlifted to Lexington; Columbia driver taken to Russell County Hospital

Both drivers involved in a two vehicle accident on US 127 this afternoon sustained injuries, with one requiring air evacuation to the University of Kentucky Hospital.The accident occurred 2.7 miles north of Russell Springs, KY, at 2:15pm CT, Tuesday, January 2, 2007.

Mysteries: Who all will Mayor Bell appoint tonight?

Mayor says we'll like his choices, but names of appointees are still a well-kept City of Columbia Administration secret with less than two hours to go

The agenda for tonight's City Council meeting is brief, but the meeting is providing some fine political theatre, with a whole community getting anticipatory about who will be named to the City Council Seat held for eight hours by Greg Thomas, who resigned at 8:00am New Year's Day, and who will be named to the two vacancies on the Columbia Utilities Commission?

If that weren't enough, the Mayor is squirreling the names of several other appointments to be announced at tonight's monthly meeting, 6:00pm January 3, 2006.

Tiffany Hadley new community liason for The Center

Former Adair Progress editor will represent The Center for Rural Development in its 18 western-most counties.

Tiffany Hadley of Columbia joined The Center for Rural Development team on December 4, 2006, as their newest community liaison representing 18 counties, including Adair, in Southern and Eastern Kentucky.

The new liaison is the daughter of Dwight C. and Carolyn Wright Hadley and is the granddaughter of Mary Edna Hadley, all of whom live in Columbia. She is also the granddaughter of the the late Ben Hadley and of the late Dolie and Hazel Wright, all of the Cundiff, or Melson Ridge, community.

Obituary: Rev. Joe A. Firquin, 74, Korean Conflict veteran

Rev. Firquin, a Methodist minister, was an Adair native and a member of a distinguished Adair County family. Visitation and the funeral service will be in Munfordville; burial will be at Haven Hill in Columbia
Rev. Joe A. Firquin, 74, Munfordville, KY, passed away at 11:04am, Monday, January 1, 2007, at the Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown, KY. The Adair County native was born on July 31, 1932, the son of Guy and Beatrice Coomer Firquin. He grew up in the Weed community of this county.

He was a Methodist minister. During his long career, he was pastor at Ray's Branch, Greenhill, Bonnieville, Rock Creek, Millerstown, and the Hardyville Union Church, where he pastored for nine years.

Columbia City Police Dept. issues Dec. 2006 Activity Report

Columbia Chief of Police Mark Harris has issued the department's report of citations and arrests and its activity report for December 2006.

There were 59 citations issued and 457 calls for service in December 2006. The force also reports 10 incidents of assisting motorists, 61 lockouts, 25 escorts, 34 accidents investigated, and eight cases opened. The complete, itemized report follows:

TODAY, Tues., Jan. 2, 2007: Schools ARE in session today

Events for today, the 2nd day of 2007, in brief:
  1. National day of mourning for our 38th President, Gerald R. Ford
  2. It's official: Schools will be open today, Mr. Treece says.
  3. The Columbia City Council meets this evening at 6:00pm. CT
  4. Regular meetings for G.R.A.W.L., the Green River Animal Welfare League, for the Columbia Adair County Industrial Development Authority, but word from the Chamber of Commerce building is that, because of the holidays, the CACIDA meeting is being re-scheduled for Tuesday, January 9, 2006. These are recurring events. It is advised that those planning to attend check with the organizations.
