Poetry by Billy Joe Fudge: The Angler

Inspired by photo 69002 The Angler at evening time

The Angler at Evening Time
by Billy Joe Fudge
Some images create in us
Spaces for feelings never present
Or sought.

Often they fill a space
Long vacated
By memories
Frozen by time
And shattered by life.

Oh how we run,
Fast and furious
And frenzied.
Bloating ourselves
Upon empty calories;
With stomachs soured
By misery
And gluttony.

Relax
And feel the calm,
Hear the quite,
Smell the evening,
Touch the past
See the future
And live.
Billy Joe Fudge, October 12 2016

Industrial Hemp Research pilot program taking applications

New measures set to enable sustained growth of the program

By Ted Sloan

Frankfort, KY - Kentuckians interested in participating in the industrial hemp research pilot program in 2017 are invited to submit an application with the Kentucky Department of Agriculture.

"The pilot research program will continue to build on the successes of the previous administration by developing research data on industrial hemp production, processing, manufacturing, and marketing for Kentucky growers," Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles said. "KDA's objective is to expand and strengthen Kentucky's research pilot program, so that if the federal government chooses to remove industrial hemp from the list of controlled substances, Kentucky's growers and farmers will be positioned to thrive, prosper and ultimately prevail as national leaders in industrial hemp production."

The KDA operates its program under the authority of a provision of the 2014 federal farm bill, 7 U.S.C. S 5940, that permits industrial hemp pilot programs in states where hemp production is permitted by state law. Participants planted more than 2,350 acres of hemp in 2016 compared with 922 acres in 2015 and 33 acres in 2014, the first year of the program.

Carol Perkins: Firepit brings back memories of 'creek days'

As we stood with our "fishing poles" in the fire, I thought of my creek bed days of wiener roasts down the road from my great uncle's place. The road was so washed out; we had to walk several feet from his house to the bed of the creek, carrying our supplies. The men stacked deadwood for the fire, and we girls ducked flying embers from the breeze that carried them in every direction. We had no folding chairs but sat on quilts thrown over sand or rocks. - CAROL PERKINS

The firepit that Guy gave me for Christmas four years ago had never had a fire in it. Until this weekend, we had never found (or taken) an occasion to use it. Our daughter and grandson came to visit during his fall break, and they helped us set up my annual display of straw, mums, and pumpkins when it occurred to me that now was the time. "Let's have a wiener roast!" I said.
