I think Jim is in his element. You will note he is wearing his venerable snowmobile jacket which saw many outings in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming.

You'll also see where I 'broke a trail' down the lane this morning. It appears a bit wavering!

Sycamore Springs: Snowplows took out fence, she writes

She's taking the issue up with the county, but she is also writing to warn others of the danger of falling limbs - as well as snowplows - to all fencing, and to warn motorists that when snowplows haven't followed roadway, other vehicles may not know where solid roadbed is - a real safety hazard, she warns.

News from Sycamore Springs

With all the ice and snow of the last few days, it is a good idea for folks to check their fences for livestock. Be it a limb from a tree that has snapped under the weight of ice and snow or a county road truck taking out a fence. Livestock can, and will (even those that normally are quiet content to the confines of their humble abodes) can get loose, and go on an impromptu walkabout.

Driving a snowplow is tiring, dangerous work

Adair County is a huge territory, with over 600 miles of county roads to clear

A reader sends a link as a response to the complaints read/heard about the roads not being plowed fast enough, and the "wrong" roads being placed as priorities. Here is a news story about a plow driver in Kentucky who slid off the road in his plow and was found dead: kentucky-state-plow-driver-found-dead

The reader says at least one plow was off in a ditch here in Adair too. These workers put their lives in potential danger to brave the elements, and do the best they can to keep things clear and functional. But this is a huge county. And even in states that get a lot of snow it's hard to keep up with 17" in one day. The reads said she would just like to show her appreciation for the hard and dangerous work these people do!

Campbellsville, Green-Taylor Water customers asked to conserve

By Larry Smith, FM 99.9 The Big Dawg

Campbellsville Mayor Tony Young has requested all customers of the Campbellsville Water & Sewer Company to voluntarily conserve water. Current usage is taxing the company's capacity at this time.

The situation has developed today because so many people are home, doing laundry and using other water needs at a sometimes quadrupled amount.

A similar request to conserve has been issued by the Green-Taylor Water District in Greensburg.

Weather reminds Sharon Whitehurst of Vermont life

By Sharon Whitehurst

I appreciate Guy's common sense and perspective. Jim and I grew up in Vermont, and for a decade ran a dairy farm there. Winter threw the 'works' at us from November into early April - a long span of cold, deep snow, freezing weather and a dirt road as access for the bulk milk collector.

Winter can be both worrisome and wearisome - not much point in grumbling. Sensible rural dwellers prepare with a well-stocked pantry and supplies on hand to care for animals. Letter: Road clearing is done strictly by specific priority lists

Comments re article 80370 Tamara Rowell writes Why all roads should have same priority

By Sena Schaefer

I have read the comments about the roads and the priorities to clean them off.

Please note that there are different road departments involved here. The state road department takes care of the state roads including the parkway and down to the smallest state road in the county. The county road department takes care of other roads in the county not covered by the state department. The city takes care of the city streets.

There are places when these different departments overlap. Each department has a priority list which they follow.

Mary Hartman: A central source for road conditions

Mary Hartman writes:
Hi Ed, we are off the main roads and to get to them we will have to do a lot of snow removal. We don't know whether we could get out even if we made the effort to get to our county road. Is there any place we can get online information about road conditions in Adair County? Thanks -Mary Hartman
Mary Hartman - Right now, with the overwhelming circumstances, I would be relying on contacts with neighbors up the road, first - your neighborhood circle. And we'll be posting reports from neighborhoods as soon after received as possible. CM attempts to convey all the news we get, but in times like today, it's a continuous catchup. So far as we know, there is no centralized locations to find out the conditions from each of the entities providing snow removal: For City Streets, for County Roads, and for the KY Transportation Cabinet in the three Districts serving our area: Somerset District 8; Elizabethtown, District 4; and Bowling Green, District 3. In the event of a serious emergency, of course, 911 centers are the first resort.

Jon Halsey: Citizens need more concern for local government

Ralph has also raised another long standing issue regarding just how much longer an economically challenged community of 4500 souls can continue to afford the wide spread duplication of services to support both City and County operations.

Personal commentary

Well said.

We definitely need more transparency in local government but it will not happen until the citizens, especially the voting public demand it. When only one magistrate had enough principal to refuse to vote for a law that none of them had read and a law that on the face of it seemed to be severally flawed, it seems that the citizens of the various districts need to start being more concerned about how their elected representative is acting and why.
