Fire at ACES contained minutes before first students arrive

By Ed Waggener

A fire at 6:50amCT at Adair County Elementary School, 870 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY, was contained by staff already on the gounds minutes before the first students were scheduled to arrive at 7amCT.

The fire department was notified, and some first responders came to the scene, but the fire department call was cancelled after the fire, in a clothes dryer in the school cafeteria, was contained with damage restricted to the dryer itself - which was a total loss.

"There was some smoke odor in the immediate area, but ventilation reduced that to zero by the time students were served breakfast," Superintendent Reed said.

He said that students' enter the school through the gymnasium in the morning, and so would not likely be able to detect any hint of odor.

Maury Lewis hopes for Postcard Village contest next year

By Maury Lewis
Personal commentary

There are probably not as many cards because they didn't make it into a contest. I would like to see a Christmas window decorating contest in all of the windows of all of the buildings even the ones that are empty. It would take some planning so the theme of Christmas would need to be announced before Thanksgiving. Just thinking how pretty some of the windows could be decorated. 12/10/2015 - melewi, 10 Dec 2015.

LWC students provide funds for winter coats for Head Start

Total of 59 coats given to Adair County Head Start, to 52 students, and seven siblings

By Duane Bonifer

COLUMBIA, KY -- A group of Lindsey Wilson College students helped ensure that area children will keep warm this winter.

LWC students in the college's Bonner Program delivered 59 winter coats Thursday morning to Adair County Head Start. The coats were given to the program's 52 students, and extra coats were given to students' siblings.

LWC Bonner students raised coats and money to purchase the coats from members of the LWC community as well as Columbia-Adair County residents.

This year's drive -- which is in its fourth year -- was led by LWC Bonner student Laura Feese of Columbia, who said it felt good to make a difference in her hometown.

"I was just amazed at the generosity," Feese said. "At first, I thought there would be a lot of people who would not want to participate. But more often than not, they were very excited and wanted to give."

LWC's Bonner Program is a servant-leadership program with more than six dozen students who serve non-profit organizations throughout the region. This year, Bonner students will serve more than 20,000 hours of combined service, according to LWC Director of Civic Engagement Amy Thompson-Wells, who oversees the Bonner Program.

Programs such as the coats-for-kids drive make the Bonner students "change-makers," Thompson-Wells said.

"We like to think that we are the first phone call that our community agencies make when they need volunteers for a project," Thompson-Wells said. "Our volunteers have become really reliable for our community partners, and they are making a huge impact in the community."

Thursday's delivery of winter coats to Adair County Head Start "helps a lot of families and touches a lot of lives," said Adair County Head Start Coordinator and Family Support Specialist Shelly Nunn.

"It has a great impact our students," Nunn said. "We serve low-income families, and a lot of them don't have the money to get the winter essentials they need." Duane Bonifer, the writer of this article, is Director of Public Relations at Lindsey Wilson College

Carol Roberts: Wants Christmas Postcard Village to expand

Personal commentary

Carol Roberts writes:
I agree with the writer that Halloween garnered more interest in decorating the square than Christmas has thus far. I hope that will change in the coming days. The birth, life, and resurrection of the Son of God is the most important in the history of the world, and it is a cause for great celebration. Perhaps you have read in the news this week how the town of Waldena, MN, reacted when the grinches there protested a public nativity display. I hope they will be an inspiration to good people everywhere. Merry Christmas to you and your staff and all the good people of Columbia...and to all Kentuckians! --Carol Roberts
