By Ralph Waggener

We have had many a plan made to do big things, one I can remember was the city swimming pool built by hands on work of Columbia business men.

A lot of these men were World War II veterans.

Since this job was completed the hard way by a lot of hand on hard work, I don't know of very many plans that were, well, anything but just plans.

Access and comfort? What? Some would like to have access to a comfortable movie theater.

How about the owners of some of the rundown buildings on the Square invest in remodeling and offer those buildings for rent at reasonable rates to encourage economic growth in downtown Columbia.

Joyce Coomer: What is L.E.A.D.S. program?

Joyce Coomer writes:
Question: What is the L.E.A.D.S. program that the fiscal court is having a public hearing about? - Joyce M. Coomer. 270-384-4495
Thanks. We'll be hoping for comments from those better acquainted with the system. It is basically a program to register items with law enforcement, which are used as collateral or sold to pawn shops, salvage yards, and other businesses dealing in used merchandise. Some in law enforcement strongly advocate the program. Many in the affected business say it's unnecessary red tape, that the net result would be fewer stolen items recovered, and that the company hustling the softwear will be the real beneficiaries. - E.W.

BJF: We need an overall strategy to get jobs

Strategy would include making Columbia a more attractive place to live to as a strategy of jobs recruitment, economic development

I could not agree more with Stephen Collins that our community needs local jobs and we need good ones, too. However, making jobs a priority or making new sidewalks a priority just out of the blue will not bring either into reality.
