Irene Miller Nell was welcomed with birthday greetings by her good friends Barbara Franklin and Elma Bradshaw Tuesday at Elma's home in Columbia. They were especially honoring her for this birthday because on Friday, July 24, Irene will be 100 years young.

Her family began celebrating early. Her daughter arranged a surprise birthday party for her last Sunday at their church, Crestwood Baptist. "Happy 100th birthday Irene Nell: was the announcement on the marquee out front, right by the sign with the Ten Commandments.

She shared that there were a hundred cupcakes along with a huge cake with chocolate, strawberry and vanilla sections. The celebration just keeps going.

Asked how to enjoy a long life, Irene said she believes in eating what you want, keep on working, and read the Book of James. When asked what she likes about James, she said simply, "he just tells it like it is." She reads the Bible through regularly and reads over a hundred books each year.

She's an Adair County native. She and her husband Bill ran a popular business on the square in Columbia where First and Farmers Bank is now. For 28 years they owned and operated the popular Nell's Variety Store, a favorite of all who remember it. She says her husband Bill never had a vacation and she only had one week off in all those years.

After they let go of their store, she went to work for Louise Brock in her shop. They raised two children in Columbia. She lost Bill, a WWII veteran, in 1997 and her son from an earlier marriage, David Lee Walker, passed away at age 59.

She lives with her daughter Sue and son-in-law Joe Kirkman in Frankfort and said she and her dog Cookie live happily in their own suite there. Irene has six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

She thinks the Adair County Courthouse may be the biggest change she's seen here in her century. She has memories of riding in a buggy in her early life and she still enjoys driving her car today. She says that memories of riding in a buggy to people now going to the moon seems unreal.

The Frankfort State Journal newspaper has made an appointment to interview Irene later this week. She has received a birthday letter from Gov. Steve Beshear, one from former Governor Julian Carroll and was made a Kentucky Colonel. She also received a letter from the Senate and her birthday card count from well-wishers is going past 100 as she adds cards from friends like Barbara and Elma on this visit to Columbia.

For Irene Nell's 100th Birthday: Photo of Nell's Variety

2015-07-22 - SW corner, Columbia, KY, Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo from Mike Watson.
This photo comes as a gift to Irene Miller Nell on the occasion of her 100th birthday celebration. the photo was made before Nell's Variety Store closed so it would probably have been taken in the late 1960s. The store was everything a variety store should be and the type store that is missed so much on the public square today. First National Bank, at left, is now First and Farmers and takes up both these building spaces plus the one that housed the Adair County News to the right of Nell's when Peggy Fudge's mom was publisher. - LW
