Pet peeve: Yard Sale ad for sale which isn't

By Peg Schaeffer

Last weekend I went searching for Yard Sales using Columbia Magazine. But when I would see a sign I'd follow it looking for a bargain. Nothing makes me madder when I follow a Yard Sale sign only to find out it was from previous weeks. If you have a Yard Sale you need to remove the signs so people don't waste their time following outdated signs. - Peg Schaeffer

Peg Schaeffer, thanks - Yard sales are advertised by many means. Practicing the Golden Rule does mean being responsible. We can't speak for other media, but at CM we make every attempt to make sure that our classified ads, including Yard Sales, are always accurate and up to date. We'd expect that advertisers who use other media follow up to keep the public informed. - EW

Guy Babin: Senator-Elect Wise could have been more gracious

A note from CM: All media reporting the 'press conference' story acted responsibly, including the WAVE and CM and other broadcast sources. Senator-Elect Wise should have directed his indignation at the source who called in the story to broadcast sources. At next Tuesday night's Fiscal Court meeting, perhaps that source will explain how the media received the information. At that meeting, the public should also know whether the funds are 'new' state grants or funds which virtually every other county in the receives (usually called Discretionary Funds) and is announced by the County Judge Executive in each county. If it is 'new' money, we're grateful. If the announcement proves to be political manipulations of the funds, and it's simply political maneuvering, the public will know. Even though Guy Babin is right that honest mistakes are made, the original story was not a mistake. The blame lies solely with the original source. Still, we appreciate Mr. Babin's understanding of the problems facing local media. - ED WAGGENER

Guy Babin writes:

Perhaps Senator-Elect Wise has never made an honest mistake . . .

I do tread on fragile footings here not knowing the "rest of the story"; but I do find it highly unlikely anyone in our community involved with publishing the referenced story did so with malice, ill will, or subversive political deceit.
