She was the matriarch of a distinguished, highly regarded Adair County, KY family. She was a native of Adair County and a resident of the county at the time of her death. She was the daughter of the late Finis E. & Gladys Cravens Burton and the widow of Milton Stephens. She leaves 10 direct living descendants. She was a Christian and attended the Trinity United Methodist Church, She was a retired School Teacher having taught at Shepherd Grade Center for many years.

Helen B. Stephens age 89 years of Columbia, KY passed away Thursday, September 4, 2014 at 4:50pmCT, at Summit Manor Health & Rehab Center in Columbia, KY.

Funeral service Sunday September 7, 2014 at 2pmCT at Stotts-Phelps-MQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY. Clergy officiating will be Bro. Troy Long and Rev. Steve Pescosolido. Interment will be in Haven Hill Cemetery, 1276 Liberty Road, Columbia, KY.

She was born on Saturday, September 20, 1924 in Adair County, KY. She was the daughter of the late Finis E. & Gladys Cravens Burton. She died Thursday, September 4, 2014, in Columbia, Adair County, KY, at the age of 89 years, 11 months, and 15 days. She was the widow of Milton Stephens who preceded her in death on July 28, 2012.

She is survived by the following:
  • Two sons: Michael Stephens & Anita of Columbia, KY, and Richard Stephens & Marilyn of Columbia, KY.

  • One sister: Margie Rigney of Elizabethtown, KY

  • Locally by a sister-in-law: Pauline Stephens Cheatham of Columbia, KY

  • Four grandchildren: Chris Stephens, LaGene Sexton & husband Mendel; Ryan Stephens, and Lee Stephens & wife Lindsey

  • Four great grandchildren: Meredith Corbin, Hayley Stephens, Trey Stephens and Raegann Stephens

  • Several nieces, nephews & a host of other relatives and friends
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of a donation to Trinity United Methodist Church or Gideon Bibles and may be made at the funeral home visitation after 4:30pmCT, Saturday, September 6, 2014.
