State and County road crews doing great work

By Victoria Pike
Commentary

The state and county road crews are still out trying to clear the Walmart area of ice and snow. They have certainly had their work cut out for them for the last 24 hours. These fellows need some kind of recognition for all their hard work this winter.

I was able to make it to the mill to get the calves a load of feed this morning thanks to all their hard work. The girls send a special moooo to all who made their breakfast possible.

Bill Troutwine story sparks memories of Bear Tooth Pass

And great steaks in Montana

Mary Ann Brown writes:
Red Lodge one of the places that I have truly enjoyed visiting and only got to go there twice, but the drive up and over Bear Tooth Pass was well worth it. Just wish I could go back one more time before I leave this ole world. One of the best steaks I ever ate was at a small cafe right on the main street, can't recall the name! Cook City on Bear Tooth Pass is like one of those towns on the western shows but I haven't been there since 1995. --Mary Ann Brown

A Montana Story: The Day Hell Froze over

The next earlier Bill Troutwine Story: Donna & The Hound Dog.

By Bill Troutwine

Note: At the time this story took place Donna and I were living in Belfry, Montana, and I was working as a Red Lodge City Police Officer.

It was mid October of 1991, we moved to Montana earlier that same year. We were living in Belfry, Montana on the Wyoming/Montana border. Ricky, my son, and I had applied for elk tags in Wyoming and were lucky enough to get drawn for the elk hunt. Ricky had moved back to Kentucky and was planning to drive out for the hunt. I told him to arrive in time to be in the woods on Montana's opening day of elk season. Montana's season always opens in the middle of October. Wyoming's season always opens around the first of October.

Since we were hunting in Wyoming, near the Montana border, my plan was to catch the elk retreating fromMontana. With all the pressure of opening day, the elk would head back to Wyoming, where the season was nearly over.

District 8 crews continue to battle latest wintry mixture

By Amber Hale, Public Information Officer
KY Transportation Cabinet, District 8, Somerset, KY

SOMERSET, KY. (March 3, 2014) - After seeing a Sunday that brought mostly rain followed by a late mixture of sleet and freezing rain in the overnight hours and now accumulating snow, District 8 crews continue to battle the latest wintry mixture.

The majority of roads are still covered with snow and ice at this hour. Crews have been working around the clock to keep routes passable and will continue to do so until roadways are clear. Crews in all ten counties which include, Adair, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, McCreary, Lincoln, Pulaski, Rockcastle, Russell and Wayne are mostly plowing at this point, with light salt applications. The cabinet continues to remind motorists:
  • Exercise greater caution when driving. Slow down
  • Be prepared for slick conditions.
  • Give a wide berth to snow plows and other heavy highway equipment
  • Eliminate distractions while behind the wheel
Condition reports on major routes are available by calling 511 or by logging onto the 511 traffic and travel information website, Www.511.ky.gov. The cabinet's Safe Patrol is available to assist motorists whose vehicles become disabled on Kentucky interstates and parkways. For Safe Patrol assistance, call 511 or toll-free at 1-877-367-5982.

Travel Advisory: Extreme caution urged if driving today

By Chris Jessie

ELIZABETHTOWN, KY - Crews continue working hard to plow roads throughout District 4. Salt and calcium were laid down on primary routes Sunday morning and afternoon. As temperatures fall into the lower 20s and single digits tonight, motorists must understand that chemical treatments become ineffective. Our only option to clear roads at these extremes is plowing. Most roads were plowed for sleet overnight but have become covered again.

As snow continues to come down through mid-morning, roads will remain slick. Blowing snow is also quickly re-covering already plowed roads.

If travel is necessary, please know your driving limits and do not place yourself in a position to be stranded. Use extreme caution. - Chris Jessie, Public Information Officer, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, District 4 - Elizabethtown
