Line fence more than 60 years old.
I can remember as a child hunting dry land fish in this woods belonging to my Grandmother Annie Cheatham next to Bill Murrell. Dad (Wilburn Cheatham) and my Grandmother ran this line fence on the trees. They were there, so why not use them as a post? - Shirley Jones

Joyce Coomer: Will continue to use trees as fence posts

Using trees as fence posts is a very logical, economical and useful technique. We still employ trees as fence posts and will continue to do so when we need to do any fencing. - JOYCE COOMER

By Joyce Coomer

Trees have been used as fence posts for years because they were already there and weren't an additional expense to a farmer already strapped for cash. Not only that, it wasn't necessary to dig a post hole, and fences are often put in places where digging a post hole is difficult, if not nearly impossible.

GO or NO GO: Most schools in session today

By Larry Smith, FM 92.7 the WAVE, FM 99.9 the Big Dawg
Here's a rundown on local schools for this gusty and wet Wednesday, February 5, 2013:
  • GO, on regular schedule - Most school districts in our area are in session today including: Adair, Campbellsville Independent, Russell, and Taylor Counties.
  • GO, but on a one hour delay - Marion County, Metcalfe County - where there's flooding and several roads have been blocked due to high water, according to the Metcalfe County Schools website
  • NO GO - No school today - LaRue County and Casey County.
It looks like a great day today, but do use good uncommon sense today. It's gusty and wet; saw no pooling on KY 55 this morning, but some people out our way have reported hydroplaning hazards this morning. The waters of the mighty Russell Creek were out of their banks on Green Hills road, but none was over the road. - Larry Smith, Operations Manager, Shoreline Communications.

Vonnie Kolbenschlag: Hitching Post? an editorial poem

Hitching Post?
by Vonnie Kolbenschlag
Hitching posts were once in style
But were discontinued after a while
Because there was no longer need
To hold the reins of a riding steed.

But, standing with metal legs of green
With splintered cross bar can be seen
Upon our public square a fabrication
That cannot be termed "beautification."

No purpose, no beauty, no historic fame
Can this unsightly make-shift post acclaim
To an eyesore, do we shut our eyes?
And hear, "We can't do it," as alibis?

A metal saw can shear this post
Taking just a few minutes at the most
Our Square would gain cared-for approval
With this strange "hitching post" removal.

AND, beneath the post is dirt accumulation
That's been there for a long duration!
Vonnie Kolbenshlag, February 4, 2014
