Thanks to Regional Jailer Rick Wilson

From Daniel Phillips

This is just a quick note to say "thank you" to Rick Wilson, Jailer, Adair County Regional Jail. This afternoon Mr. Wilson took time out of his schedule to show my Corrections class around the facilities and teach my students about jail operations. Mr. Wilson's knowledge of corrections and his dedication to public service were readily apparent. We are fortunate to have such a resource in Columbia. - Dan Phillips, Lindsey Wilson College

In response to Ms. Joyce Coomer on Open Meetings

Jim Garner writes:
I would direct the attention of Ms. Joyce Coomer, Mr. Jim Hadley, and others to the Kentucky Open Meetings Act (KRS 61.805 TO 61.850) & the Open Records Act (KRS 61.872 TO 61.884), known informally as the Sunshine Laws, overviews of which may be viewed here:
The Kentucky Open Records Act/The Kentucky Open Meetsings Act - PDF .
Perhaps they will be so kind as to pay particular attention to the "free and open observation" and "strictly construed" clauses in the introductory information, to-wit:
"The basic policy of the Open Meetings Act & the Open Records Act is that free and open observation of public meetings and the open examination of public records is in the public interest.

"Exceptions provided for by law shall be strictly construed, even though such observation & examination may cause inconvenience or embarrassment to public officials or others."
With best regards, Jim Garner

Out of Order: Withholding information not OK --

- Even when board members are not paid

By Ralph Roy Waggener
Who is always out of order!

I understand why people on boards feel they have the right to keep information out of sight of the public, after all they are serving sometimes for no pay.

This has also been the norm for all boards, including Taxing Districts. Had we had pushed harder for all information be made public knowledge Adair County would not have in the financial problems with Westlake we are paying for now.

Letter: Closed meetings

Joyce Coomer
. . .
AMENDMENT I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
This does not say that anyone has the right to stick their nose in anywhere they please, at any time they please. Nor does it say that the news media has the right to be privy to anyone's business, regardless of whether or not it is taxpayer funded. Nor does it say that the news media should print any and everything that is made known to the news media.

The first amendment simply means that the news media is not to be censored by the government for reporting factual news that the government would rather not have reported, nor is the government supposed to censor the news media or any citizen for publishing their opinion, whether or not that opinion is favorable to the government.

Jon Halsey salutes Sharon (Burton), 1st Amendment watchdogs

Comments re article 63570 Community Voice editor advises CACEDA on closed session

Jon Halsey writes:
Ed, take one well deserved "Atta Boy" and hopefully you'll be able to wear it along with Sharon as you both take a victory lap for the home team. -Jon Halsey, Knifley KY
Jon Halsey: Thanks. The credit all goes to Sharon Burton of the Adair County Community Voice on this one. All we did was find somebody doing right and telling people about it. Please understand, too, that this is not a media vs. CACEDA issue. It's a First Amendment one. It is not about people. In the past, under the direction of Chairman Doug McCammish, any infractions were quietly and swiftly corrected. It is not about Jim Hadley - except on this issue - on which he's been stubborn and on the wrong side much of the time. That being said, it may be one of the few issues about which we have disagreement with him. He's contributed so much to the community - so much we frequently hear his name touted for the city's highest office. - EW

Billy Joe Fudge: On what makes a Real Poet

Billy Joe Fudge writes via CM to the poet, Willie M. Feese, Jr.:
Similarly Junior, I've always wanted to be able to sing and am always envious of folks such as yourself who have been blessed with that gift and talent.

Concerning the label "real poet" I must expound, somewhat. It has been said, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Should this be true and I believe it to be; I think it should be said that "poetry is the outpouring of a heart and can only be judged by the emotion it garners." - Billy Joe Fudge

Over $800 raised in 2nd Cops for Kids

By Ofc. Josh Brockman, Public Information Officer
Columbia Police Department, Chief, Jason Cross

The Columbia Police Department and the City of Columbia has just wrapped up our second "Cops For Kids" fundraiser with a very successful chili and vegetable soup lunch. Today well over 100 lunches were delivered in Columbia bringing in over 800.00 dollars with the help of donations.

This money will be added to funds raised at Downtown Days where we sponsored a cash drawing. All monies will be used to help families in need ensure that they have a Merry Christmas. Last year was our first year and we were only able to sponsor about 8 families.

This year we will well exceed that. On behalf of the Columbia Police and the City of Columbia we thank everyone for making this a success. A special thanks to Ann Marie Austin who kept things moving swiftly in the kitchen. - Ofc. Josh Brockman
