Click on headline for detailed story, photos, and rosters of performers By Duane Bonifer COLUMBIA, KY - Area residents can enjoy the sounds of the season on Monday, December 2, 2013, with the Lindsey Wilson College Singers and Concert Choir present "A Community Christmas Concert." In addition to the Lindsey Wilson choral ensembles, the December 2 concert will feature the String Chamber Ensemble: Wansoo Cho, Hana Park and Hannah Warren, with Saliem Henderson, Denis Santos and Gabriella Batista. "We're pulling together some unique forces for this experience," said LWC Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Ensembles Gerald Chafin. The December 2 concert will include traditional pieces -- including a Celtic styling of "I Saw Three Ships" and an a cappella interpretation of "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" -- as well as a new musical setting of the early-19th century carol "Silent Night." One of the more intriguing presentations of the evening will be when the Lindsey Wilson Singers perform "In the Silence" as violinist Cho plays "I Wonder As I Wander" by legendary Kentucky composer John Jacob Niles. The Singers will also perform three pieces by Cincinnati composer Howard Helvey: "Fum, Fum, Fum," "Coventry Carol" and "The Holly Bears a Berry." All three pieces will be accompanied by two pianos. "Howard Helvey has expanded the repertoire greatly for two pianos and choir. The two pianos together are much like an orchestra -- it's big, it's brassy, it's got unusual chords," Chafin said. "So the two pianos become an orchestra in and of themselves, and the Singers just happen to be doing some singing along with it." In celebration of the centennial of the birth of British composer Benjamin Britten, the Concert Choir will perform the aggressive "This Little Babe," which is set to a text by the 16th-century British Catholic martyr Robert Southwell. "You would think that such a nice-sounding title must be so calm and quiet like a lullaby," Chafin said. "It's very fast, it's very fiery. Lots of texts that talk about the battle between Christ and Satan and the birth of the child. And so it's a fight." Other selections scheduled to be performed are "Sing for Joy This Festive Day" and "Sing We Now of Christmas." Members of the Lindsey Wilson Concert Choir are: Courtney Adkins of Albany, KY; Orissa Jai Astar of Columbia; Emmalee Baker of Columbia; Torey Baker of Columbia; Latasha Calton of Williamsburg, KY; Maggie Coleman of Columbia; Tera Combs of Shelbyville, KY; Breanna Copenhaver of Mount Vernon, KY; Emma Coslow of Somerset, KY; LaDevany Franklin of Glasgow, KY; Jasmine Dowell of Campbellsville, KY; Maria Hook of Louisville, KY; Molly Kirby of Waynesburg, KY; Katie Koper of Central City, KY; Carolyn Laux of Louisville, KY; Keegan Ludwig of Glasgow, KY; Hannah McCandless of Elizabethtown, KY; Elizabeth Meyer of Columbia, KY; Eunice Mukaz of Louisville, KY; Delaney Overstreet of Parksville, KY; Rebekah Sanders of Waynesville, Ohio; Bailey Scott of Auburn, KY; Shelia Marie Stacy of Kevil, KY; Miwa Sugiyama of Chita, Japan; Jessica Turner of Tompkinsville, KY; Abbey Warren of Columbia; Hannah Warren of Columbia; Elizabeth Wilmoth of Louisville, KY; Sarah Wood of Bowling Green, KY; and Mari Yabumoto of Anjo, Japan.
