Officials brace for possible strong to severe storms

By Buddy Rogers and Monica French
News from Kentucky State Government

FRANKFORT, KY (January 29, 2013) - State and local officials continue tracking a strong storm system as it approaches the Commonwealth. Kentucky Emergency Management (KYEM) is working with the National Weather Service to discuss the threat and capability of this severe weather system.

Much of the risk to the Commonwealth will come during the overnight hours. The system carries a risk for tornadoes, as well as damaging winds and heavy rainfall that could produce flash flooding in low lying areas along small streams and creeks.

This storm system is expected to reach western Kentucky early Tuesday evening and move across the Commonwealth overnight, making it particularly dangerous for citizens who may be sleeping when the worst weather arrives.

KYEM strongly advises everyone to refresh the batteries in and monitor weather alert radios and be prepared to take appropriate safety measures should a warning be issued for your area. Be sure to have your emergency kit nearby, including a flashlight and battery-powered or hand-crank AM/FM radio. Monitor local media for updated forecasts, information and alert notifications.

The Mysterious Gray Weather Cat has looked at the signs . . .

2013-01-29 - Fortune Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
. . . and folks, it ain't good
. The Mysterious Gray Weather Cat which Great Mema has recruited for daily visits has been narrow focused today. Mostly it wants to come in the house, desperately so. Or it's intent on watching the sky with a wary eye, as in the left photo, looking for signs. After much coaxing, it delivered its summary of the situation, which we interpreted as "It ain't good." Great Mema says that they watch cats in China to see what weather is about to happen - there cats are believed to sense earthquakes ahead of time. "They're never wrong," Great Mema says of her furry friends. She's watched the Mysterious Gray Weather Cat today, and is sure something is coming down. Birds acted funny, today, too. They were either eerily quiet or making frenetic chatter, and they weren't freeloading at the seed tray. May be coincidental but the National Weather Service was predicting thunderstorms, in concert with the Mysterious Cat. - Ed Waggener

The CBC Chimes provide Times of Inspiration

Moments to stop and reflect on really important things in life

By Sue Stivers

One of the things I love about living in Columbia is listening to the Chimes from Columbia Baptist Church at noon and 5:00 PM each day. It's an inspirational time for me to stop and reflect on the things that are really important in my life.

I hope each of you are as blessed as I am when you listen to the chimes. I pray that Columbia Baptist will keep the chimes ringing forever. --Sue Stivers

Thanks, Sue Stivers. The tradition is so important to all of us, it seems. chimes times reminders are posted each day on CM in Events as much as anthing for our visitors and newcomers, noon and 5:00 PM each day seems to be in the DNA of natives here. - CM

Remembering Jay B Curtis Columbia KY (1939-2013)

Von Price writes:
I am so sad to hear of the passing of Jay Curtis. He was truly an asset to Houchens. I will always remember how polite, friendly, helpful to my mother when we would be shopping Houchens.

Maybe it is my age, but when I saw the name in the Courier Journal it did not ring a bell, but thanks to the Columbia Magazine on line with a picture of him, I immediately remembered him. I am sure that a large number of people will remember him as well. My sympathy goes to the family and friends for their loss. - Von Price, Louisville, Ky --Von Price

Von Price: Stop! Texting or phoning while driving

Von Price writes:
In this world that we live in today, everyone is busy, either on the phone or texting (God forbid) or just consumed in their own little world. I see it every day in Louisville, people running red lights, not even stopping at a stop sign. This is only my opinion, they are either color blind, or they never ever think about what could happen.

I just wish that they would do something about teenagers texting and driving. I can not tell you how many times that I have been almost side swiped by this. Or ran off the road! Please, if you are guilty of this, think of what it would be like to know that you have taken another persons life by this. Stop! - Von Price Louisville, Ky --Von Price
