Travel & Sports: Big Al meets Jim Riley, Terry Randall teammate They took Georgia Tech Yellowjackets to the NCAA for first time. Randall was on those great teams when Donald Doss was manager, before H. Hunter Durham held that job in preparation for his glory days on Euclid Avenue. Click on headline for full story with photo(s) By Big Al Owens, the Big Rig Trucker A Sports + Travel Travelogue from on the road RUSSELLVILLE, KY - I had the pleasure of visiting Russellville, KY, Monday, January 28. During my visit to this pleasant community I had a chance encounter with Jim Riley. Jim is a Big man standing 6' 7". Jim told me that he played basketball back in his youth for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Upon further review I saw that there was a guard on the 1957-58 Yellow Jacket squad that played with Jim by the name of Terry Randall, who went to school at Adair County High in Columbia, KY and played on those great Adair County High School State Tournament teams. (Remember those teams, with Terry Randall, Ralph (Get the ball to Coonie) Shearer, et al? Practically everyone over 67 ought to.) I wasn't around in those days, so don't recall all of those guys. Jim Riley was a member of the 1st Georgia Tech team to ever play in the NCAA tournament. That was in 1960. The Yellow Jackets went into the tourney ranked #8 in the nation. They advanced to the Final 8 that year but lost to eventual champions The Ohio State Buckeyes led by future NBA stars, Jerry Lucas and John "Hondo" Havilcek at Freedom Hall in Louisville. - Big Al Owens, the Big Rig Trucker This story was posted on 2013-01-29 04:23:54
