Johnny Tarter work: Better than excellent photography One of Columbia's most colorful character's now knows of photograph worthy of sitting on his casket, thanks to camera skills of Johnny Tarter. And, thanks to 'confession,' detective work by Hardscratch PI agency may be unnecessary. -CM Barry Jones writes: I just saw this picture and I want everyone to know just how good a picture this really was. Not only was the subject of the picture, a "colorful character" in his own right, please note the timing of the shot. In this picture, you can see the exact time of the muzzle blast fire leaving the barrel, the black powder smoke and the intensity of the character I portrayed. Also note at the time of the shot, just how hard I was pulling on the left rein to pull my horse around for a better shot, Yes, "At the Banker". You got it Johnny. I just told Patty a few minutes ago that this is the kind of picture I would want sitting on top of my casket. Thank you Johnny Tarter, for some better than excellent photography.Barry JonesComments re photo 42194 Bank Robbery ReEnactment Smoking Gun 2011-10-09 14:08:17 | Comments | Printable version

JIM: Columbia, KY - The best inland town in the State An immigrant from off, from Lincoln County, KY, joined the force at the Adair County News as a department head. His impressions of Columbia, KY then, mirror many of the images incomers find today. He covers many subjects appropriate to today's Columbia/Adair County, particularly of note is that Eats have always been a priority topic here and was noted by the new resident: 'The Marcum and Hancock Hotels are up-to-date as to equipment and service. Their Bills of Fare will certainly satisfy the most fastidious' he wrote. The mysterious JIM has outdone himself this time, with a real gem of a Sunday read. -CM By JIM The following essay was penned by Henry Richardson (H.R.) Camnitz shortly after his arrival in Columbia in the late summer of 1904 to take charge of the job printing department of the Adair County News. At the time, Columbia was enjoying an era of unprecedented prosperity and expansion. The development of the Jamestown Hill area had started when L.B. Hurt purchased the Logan Bomar lands in the closing days of 1901. Less than a year later, Scott Montgomery sold a boundary of land opposite the J.M. Russell property, and it was laid off into town lots. At about the same time as the Montgomery property was subdivided in late 1902, Tutt & Conover began advertising lots for sale in what would become known as the Tutt Addition of Columbia. At the time Mr. Camnitz arrived from Lincoln County, the venerable Male & Female High School was enjoying a brief resurgence in popularity, and the newly opened Lindsey Wilson Training School was attracting students -- and their families -- from all over Adair County as well as the immediately surrounding region. The essay appeared on the front page of the September 21, 1904 edition of the paper. My First Impressions of Columbia. On the night of August 25th, 1904, I left my home, where I had lived for twenty years, for Columbia, Ky. After a circuitous route I reached my destination. I imagined myself a "stranger in a strange land" but that awful feeling vanished as rapidly as though aided by some powerful and unknown source through the hearty welcome I received from the citizens here. Tom Chaney: R731: The Sacred Power of Stories Tom Chaney, Of Writers and Their Books. R731 The Sacred Power of Stories first appeared in the Hart County News-Herald on Sunday, 23 April 2006 The next earlier Tom Chaney Of Writers and Their Books column, R730: John Ed Pearce 'Tis said that an expert is a person at least fifty miles from home. I try to make it my practice to stay beyond that limit. I look on the fifty mile limit for story telling for a fee much as depression era bootleggers honored the three mile offshore limit in the rum running days of prohibition. A couple of weeks ago, I skirted the near edge of that free zone in Columbia at Lindsey Wilson College. Phil Hanna, poor soul, in an effort to get himself permanently barred from the college lecture committee, asked me to come and tell stories to the assembled throngs one lovely spring day. Historic Adair Courthouse matters - Just ask Jacob Schilling Unlike the example being set by our gridlocked leaders in Washington D.C., Adair County's leaders came together with the city's majority vote to join the county and contribute to the courthouse restoration. I was never more proud to be an Adair Countian than at the moment when the hands of both city and county leadership came together on this vital decision to move ahead. The moment was a big step in the process echoed in one of the booths on the square during Downtown Days with a banner declaring 'this place matters'. -LW Click on headline for story with photo(s) By Linda Waggener This place matters. Prayers needed for a great friend, Chuck Hinman By Robert Stone Chuck Hinman, prolific writer of the It's Just Me Again stories, has suffered a stroke and all eyesight is now gone. His son Paul will be taking him to see a neurologist on November 3. Home health services and a private duty nurse are now taking care of him. Chuck needs your prayers.
