Pumpkin Festival's Pumpkin Chuckin' Competition One of the highlights of the Pumpkin Festival held in Edmonton last Saturday was the Pumpkin Chuckin' Competition. Contestants had all constructed trebuchets for the event, and came to see whose machine could fling a pumpkin the farthest. It was an excellent exercise in physics and mechanical engineering for the High School Shop Class and other contestants. Click on headline for story plus photo(s) By Ted Martin Here is an update on this year's Pumpkin Chuckin' Competition. We had four machines participate this year. Heaven's Path had two machines, the High School shop class had one machine, and the 4-H Explorers had one machine. First place was taken by Heaven's Path's trebuchet operated by Aaron Petranek. Second place was taken by the High School shop class's trebuchet operated by the students. Third place was taken by Heaven's Path's centrifugal machine operated by Ted Martin. Fourth place was taken by the 4-H explorer's air cannon operated by Brian Pringle and crew. Edmonton State Bank donated a $100.00 cash prize for the winner. Aaron Petranek received the first place prize then donated $50.00 each to the High School and 4-H teams. We had our largest audience turnout ever this year. Children from the audience participated in pumpkin games and giant sling shot competition. Steve Gibson generously donated all the pumpkins (ammunition) for this event. The 4-H and Imagination Inc. supplied concessions during the event. Bill Lagerman supplied the four wheeler and clean-up equipment for the pumpkin carnage on the battle field. We had a great time playing with the pumpkins this year and I would like to thank all the participants, volunteers, spectators, sponsors and everyone who had a hand in making this event possible. -TED MARTIN This story was posted on 2011-10-09 10:29:42
