Ione Stapp was a wonderful woman!

Annita Barnett writes:
Ione was a very wonderful woman! We all affectionately called her "Ma." I love her and miss her so much. She was a cousin to my two children, Jaykob and Keitha Lee. Their dad, the late Keith Lee, was a veteran and is buried in that same cemetery. Doris and Nancy are also a cousin to my children. So glad to see the nice gesture they have done in memory of Gene and her. -Annita Barnett

Private comments, en passant, from Jim

"...in the latter days of his term, Brown's administration was rocked when his son Archibald & Archibald's paramour were gunned down by the latter husband's at a disreputable boarding house in Louisville." Throwaway line from

Ed,

There's enough fodder in that throwaway line from today's "100 years ago" to fill am uber-steamy trilogy of Peyton Place-ish novels: the divorced son of a high profile politician; his paramour, the drop dead gorgeous wild-child daughter of a former state librarian; illicit trysts in a tawdry "house of assignation;" drugs and rumors of drugs; wild goings-on; a double murder ruled as justifiable homicides; and even a ballad titled "Gordon & Arch (sung to the tune of "Love Oh Careless Love") about the male principals in this melodramatic maelstrom.

On the other hand, there's exactly enough for a respectable length volume of "just the facts, Ma'am" with an appendix about Adair Countian Parker Watkins Hardin peripheral involvement - he was Brown's Democratic primary opponent in '91 and Brown played a passive but important role in Hardin's defeat in his 1895 gubernatorial bid.

(As a bit of an aside, I've often wondered how different would be the political landscape of Kentucky today had P. Wat not been the victim of the machinations of Stone and Goebel in the notorious Music Hall convention of '99. I assume you know there is a hardcore cabalistic cadre of True Believers who take Goebel's assassination as proof positive that karma's a bitch.)

As noted in the column, the paramour was the granddaughter of the thrice-married Appellate Court Judge Zach Wheat, who took a figurative shotgun and blew off his political feet in the 1850s by aligning with the American Party, aka the Know-Nothings (in short, the 19th century Tea Party.) She was also the great-grand daughter of one-time Adair County resident and later Kentucky Supreme Court Justice Ben Monroe.

And other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, there's little to say about the abovementioned throwaway line.

But there's more. The news from Jim is timely, topical, and, above all else written with great humor. Today's "Jim" column is a masterpiece, isn't it? -Ed Waggener

Rube Goldberg Group: Students make the simple complicated

Rube Goldberg Machine Group holds inaugural Demonstration
Click on headline for story plus photo(s)

By Duane Bonifer
News from Lindsey Wilson College

A group of Lindsey Wilson College students successfully complicated a simple process on Friday afternoon. The college's Rube Goldberg Machine Group held its inaugural demonstration in the Jim & Helen Lee Fugitte Science Center.

The eight-member student group demonstrated the roundabout way to swipe an LWC student ID card. Rather than taking a few moments to scan a card, the students created a contraption that took about 45 seconds. They demonstrated their invention twice, and only needed one human intervention each time it was executed.

Rube Goldberg was a 20th-century American cartoonist whose drawings depicted complex devices that performed simple tasks in indirect, convoluted ways. LWC's Rube Goldberg Machine Group plans to hold at least one more demonstration this school year.

Members of the LWC Rube Goldberg Machine Group are: Marybeth Campbell of Corinth, KY; Seirra Coe of Greensburg, KY; Korianne Cox of Columbia; Johnny Keith of Columbia; Bryce McDaniel of Campbellsville, KY; Hezekeiah Weiss of McKee, KY; Thomas Williams of Russell Springs, KY; and Chris Wright of Campbellsville, KY The group's adviser is Assistant Professor of Physics Mark L. McKinnon.

In honor of Chloe: Grateful mother asks help for another baby

Chloe is now a bright eyed five year old with a beautiful smile. She had to fight to live, and her mother remembers all the help she received from family and friends. Now she has friends who are facing the same challenges, and asks for help for them and their little boy - in honor of Chloe.

By Denise Richards

On June 20, 2005 a very fragile adorable baby girl Chloe Alexandria Richards arrived. She was born premature at 32 weeks 3 days, weighing just 3 pounds 1 ounce.

While our little miracle struggled to survive in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), she had so many obstacles to overcome. But she did. She is a little fighter. She spent the next four and a half weeks in the NICU.

Carol Perkins: Let's Face It - The Permanent Facelift

In the age of Permanent Make-up and Drive By Cosmetic Surgeons, Carol asks, "What is a woman to do?" and answers, "I won't trade in my face for a new one because I might get a lemon. I'll just dodge mirrors, stay out of photographs, and run from video cameras!
The next earlier Carol Perkins column is Life Threatening Experiences

By Carol Perkins

Growing older is a problem for some women. There is seldom a conversation among them that doesn't stem around their looks and the extent they will go to remain young looking. Words slip from their lips like, "Have you seen so and so? She looks so old!" They are the age police.

I don't think about aging too much until I fill out an online form and have to scroll down decades to find my birth year. I think of it when a younger person talks about his grandparents being old and they are my age. Frankly, I don't put much emphasis on age. If I did, then I would lather my face up at night with creams and lotions, guaranteed to eradicate age spots, creases, and crow's feet. I have never believed in anything but soap and water.

Literature and the Plague

A few weeks back I wrote about John M. Barry's compelling study of The Great Influenza. I was struck, as was he, by how few writers in their fiction have dealt directly with the influenza epidemic.

Mary McCarthy lost both parents in November 1918. "She said almost nothing of the epidemic." John Dos Passos was ill with influenza in his early twenties. He barely alludes to it in his fiction. Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Faulkner pretty much ignore it.

I was born at home near Putnam, a few miles northwest of Blue Springs, Nebraska, population 700. The proud parents were Merle Mouser Hinman and Arley Hinman. I was a ten-month ten-pound baby and according to Mom I was born in the night in a raging Nebraska blizzard. My birth certificate shows I was born January 19, 1922 and Dr. E. A. Warner of Blue Springs was the attending physician. I was promptly given my name Charles Ray Hinman after my maternal Grandfather, Charles D. Mouser and my Dad, Arley Ray Hinman. Grandpa Mouser was a long-time painter in the Wymore-Blue Springs area and served many years as mayor of Blue Springs.

A good name counts in Kentucky county names, Part II

As I wrote last week, having a good name is an important thing. This truth is referenced in scripture (take a look at Proverbs 22 and Ecclesiastes 7, for example) and confirmed in daily life. In Kentucky the good names of some interesting folks have been honored through the counties that serve as their namesakes. Among the counties named 200 years ago for prominent people are Clay (for General Green Clay), Hopkins (for Samuel Hopkins) and Lewis (for Meriwether Lewis). I touched on those counties last week, but this week I take note of another man whose name was affixed to a Kentucky county back in 1806, Colonel William Casey (1754-1816).

by "Jim"

This eclectic assortment of articles and advertisements -- from horse racing to the hilarious, from solemn to the sublime -- appeared in various newspapers across the state from the early 1800s through 1910. Many of the pieces appeared in years for which no extant copies of The Spectator or the Adair County News exist, and of the others, few drew mention in those two worthy papers.

George W. Basee, of Hills County, Iowa, went to Columbia, Adair County, Ky., to wed Miss Susan Gadberry, but she backed out. It was a matrimonial agency match. -- Bourbon (County, Ky.) News, December 31, 1897. (Apparently, Ms. Gadberry reversed course and backed back into the marriage shortly thereafter, as Adair County records indicate she and Mr. Basee -- also variously spelled Bay, Bays, and Bayse -- were made as one on January 3, 1898. The groom was 47; this was his second marriage. Ms. Gadberry was 32 and had not previously sailed the sea of matrimony.)
