Help is needed with Tarter Cemetery maintenance

Author found cemetery near Gradyville, KY in bad need of care on recent visit here; returned 200 miles home and back to bring back lawn mower and work on grass. Six hours of work had grounds looking great, but regular maintenance is needed. Help is requested

By Arvist Rodgers

We were in Columbia last week visiting family and eating that good southern food. We ate several places but Betty's OK Country Cooking was our favorite. I must say they were all delicious.

We went to the Tarters Chapel cemetery as my mother, father, brother, as well as my grandparents are buried there.

The cemetery hadn't been mowed for weeks. I was so distraught because we had been donating money to help with the mowing and upkeep of the cemetery. Cecil (Pete) Beard had kept it mowed.

M.E. Lewis asks if we think too small
about what we have to offer

About: Steve Wheeler thinks Chicago greatest food town

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

True, Columbia is a small town, but if you market the area and not just the town, we get larger.

We sit right off of I -66 corridor and almost in the middle of it right now. We can be reached easily from Somerset, Glasgow, Campbellsville, and all the other smaller towns around this area.

We travel to the other towns to eat. Why can't they travel here to eat? If we build it they will come.I think we think too small when it comes to marketing this area.

Steve Wheeler thinks Chicago greatest food town

About: Dual Breeding and Chi-town citizenship holder wants Portillos here

To Greg Dawkins, via CM:

I agree with you! But I doubt that Portillo's would ever come to a small town like Columbia.

You're right in saying they are the best hot dogs in the world!

As a lifelong Sox fan, my wife and I have been to Portillo's on several occasions. It's a fine place to eat indeed!

About: Dual Breeding and Chi-town citizenship holder wants Portillo's here

By Wanda Pittman, guest EK food critic

I'm also from Chicago, but I have lived here since 1971.

The best hotdog was at a small hotdog stand at Lockport, IL, about 40 miles south of Chicago.

Every time I go there I have to get a hotdog.

And the best chicken that I have ever eaten anywhere is Brown's fried chicken.

Epicurean Kentuckian: Perfect Hotdog, The Francheezie

About: In the Quest for Perfect Hotdog

By "Mary"

Chicago does one hot dog offering that I have NEVER found anywhere else in my travels, the Francheezie. A jumbo beef hot dog partially split down the middle, wrapped in bacon with cheese on top, then put into a toasted bun.

In my book that is right up there with the wonderful Chicago gyros sandwiches, and the thought of it brings back a lot of memories.
