Epicurean Kentuckian: Best hotdog in Lockport, IL, she says

And maintains that Brown's has the best fried chicken anywhere
About: Dual Breeding and Chi-town citizenship holder wants Portillo's here

By Wanda Pittman, guest EK food critic

I'm also from Chicago, but I have lived here since 1971.

The best hotdog was at a small hotdog stand at Lockport, IL, about 40 miles south of Chicago.

Every time I go there I have to get a hotdog.

And the best chicken that I have ever eaten anywhere is Brown's fried chicken.

It started in Bridgeview IL, a suburb of Chicago. Mr. Brown had a small store. If you went in and ordered a chicken he would kill it and cook it while you waited. This was about 50 years ago. He then started franchises all over the northern part of Ill. I have never found a better fried chicken anywhere. And the coleslaw was to die for. -Wanda Pittman

For the most part, you can probably get away with what you say, without physical harm. But everyone should have fair warning on the Fried Chicken claims: There are among, us, right here in Columbia, KY, as-yet unpacified Arkansawyers, some of whom attended THE University, in Fayetteville. They could have a word or four to say about fried chicken. They get right fractious if anyone thinks there's any a-tall, bettern Arkansas Quality Fried Chicken. Not even at Willie Mae's Scotch House. Definitely not in Frankenmuth, MI. Not even the wonderful Kentucky Fried served at the old the Starlight Drive-in on Nicholasville RD, back when it was open and carried Col. Sanders' chicken as a sideline. The best ever, of all times, had to be Jethro Davidson Harper's mammoth fried chicken breast, served at the Circle R. -EK
