Ideas for summer activities at CWC
at What Can I Do Now? program

Event for parents and students is designed to keep kids active and learning during the summer months, to help them retain what they have learned and be able to start school where they left off at the end of previous school term.

By Patty Jones and Dana Harmon

Col. Wm. Casey, Adair County Elementary School and John Adair Intermediate School have joined forces to help keep students active andinvolved over the coming summer. On Thursday evening, April 29, 2010, from 4pm-6:30pmCT, the three schools are sponsoring an event called "What Can We Do Now?," which will be held at the Col. Wm Casey Elementary School Gym, at 220 Gen. John Adair DR, Columbia, KY.

Parents and students from the schools are encouraged to stop by and learn about what all is happening in our community during the Summer of 2010.

This event will host representatives from various clubs, organizations, camps and activities, for registration and information at or with:
  • Camp Invention
  • Adair Co. Public Library
  • LWC Sports Camps
  • 4-H and Cooperative Extension Services
  • Green River Lake
  • Girl Scouts
  • Adair County Health Department
  • Daycares
  • Churches' Summer Activities
  • and many more
Each group will have information on how to be a part of their particular activity. Sports, Science, Reading, Vacation Bible School, and more will be a part of the evening.

There is research which indicates that most students lose as much as two months of learned information during the summer months. Students who participate in some type of summer learning activities retain that information and begin the new school year where they left off the prior year, according to the research.

The event is sponsored by the Col. Wm. Casey Title I, 21st CCLC (Camp Casey), CWC/JAIS Family Resource, ACES Title I, ACES Family Resource, JAIS Title I, and Summer Programming Providers

For more information you may call Colonel Wm.Casey at (270) 384-3367, Adair County Elementary at (270) 384-0077, or John AdairIntermediate at 384-3341.

Remembering Mr. Junior Lumpkin:
A wonderful father in law

About: Obituary: Mr Junior Lumpkin 55 Campbellsville, KY

By Lindsay Harding
In loving memory of Junior Lumpkin.

I could never express to you what a wonderful father in law you have been to me. You have loved me like I was your own. You have loved my son, Griffen, just as he was one of your own, and you were his Papaw. He didn't see it any different way. It breaks my heart that Gavin (BooBoo) will never be able to hear you say to him how he makes your heart want to explode because you loved him so much.

Reader, 83, proud of genealogy she is finding

About: Andrew Burton at house once owned by Thomas Burton

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I have been reading the story of the Burtons trip to their heritage in Virginia.I can understand how proud they can be.

As I look at the sign Andrew is standing by, I too am very proud, as I am the 9th generation down Great Granddaughter of Ambrose Cobb and Ann White, and also the 10th generation neice of the Rev.Robert Hunt, the 1st Chaplin to the New World t Jamestown, in 1606.

Being 83 years old, I have been overwhelmed at the things I am finding in my genealogy searches.

Hopefully the Burtons will see this.

Birthdays: CM Tries, but failed on this big one!

Just when we thought we were doing great getting all the important Birthdays, Anniversaries, and In Memory Birthdays posted, we missed a big one, but Christine Patton came to our rescue. She wrote, 14 minutes ago:
"Angie Melson is having a birthday today April 27, 2010. Have a GREAT day!Love, Your one and only sis, Chris."
CM's excuse is that, with so many important people already recognized, anyone could have thought the list complete. On the outside chance that we still don't have everybody who's birthday is April 27, 2010, in the CM readership, please submit using any Contact/Submit Button

When you visit the current two month entries at Celebrations: Birthdays, In Memory Birthdays, and Anniversaries why not help us out and see who else we may have overlooked.

Birds of Kentucky:
Bliss, KY, Canada Geese get uppity. Move

Leave pastoral bliss of native Bliss, KY, for posh address at The Pines at Lindsey Wilson, 275 Country Club RD, Columbia, KY
About: The Goose Family at Bliss, KY: There are six babies

"Kenneth (Bliss, KY Mayor Kenneth Scott) said to tell you that his baby geese are moving on up, like the Jeffersons. They moved to the golf course pond. So you will have to go over there to take pictures of the progress they make. We will be watching, too," writes Frances Salyers, who, in real life, is proprietor of D & F Grocery and Deli, 4731 Edmonton RD, Columbia, KY in the Village of Gradyville, Adair Co. District 4.

Social climbing apparently affects Canada geese, too. Guess they are like some the elite of Brentwood, the Newport crowd, and the 0-Niners in Little Rock. Gotta get the right address, or a everybody won't know they've made it. There is a country song, a moral, and maybe the basis for a passable homily in this situation. -EW
