Taylor County Holiday Helpline is open for those in need<

The Holiday Helpline is Taylor County's cooperative effort at good stewardship and benevolence at Christmas. Charitable groups or individuals have relied for years on this Interagency project. They simply call the number and ask to be matched with a person or people who have needs. Folks who would not have any "Christmas" if it weren't for the charity of others, are asked to call (270) 849-2363 between November 30 and December 4, 2009. The telephone will be managed by volunteers afternoons from 1pm to 4:3pmET. Callers will need to know names, ages of children, addresses, etc. The number to call to adopt a family or for a church to check on a family is (270) 469-1369. Setting the record straight on Edd Baker at LWJC

In those days, the crew was Robert Wheat, Ed Cooper, Nina Stone, and occasionally, in the summer, Billy Wheat had a part time job there.

About: Question on Edd Baker

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I am 61 years old and the son of Robert Wheat. He and Ed Cooper and Nina Stone are the only ones who worked at Lindsey Wilson College in maintenance besides me in the time period mentioned. I worked part time in summer (God that was a long time ago). Edd Baker and Velvie Vaughn had other employment.

Brockman Center has strong links to Adair, Cumberland Counties

About: CU opens Brockman Center in Hodgenville KY

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Thanks for carrying the photographs and story on the dedication of Campbellsville University's Brockman Center in Hodgenville. Dr. Britt Brockman is a first cousin of mine - his father, Russell Brockman of Hodgenville, is a brother to my late mother, Elizabeth Brockman Chowning of Amandaville in Cumberland County. Dr. Brockman and I are the great-grandchildren of George Weatherford Brockman who is buried in the Columbia city cemetery, along with his second wife Elizabeth Cheatham Brockman. "Pa Brockman" as he was called by my family, was a native of Adair County, but moved to the Amandaville community of Cumberland County after marrying his first wife, who was Citie Baker Brockman.

We also appreciate very much the generosity of our good friend, Freddie Hilpp of Lebanon, who donated the building to Campbellsville University. Thanks for your coverage.

Happy Thanksgiving to all...

s/John Chowning

Two precincts vote moist in Russell Co., KY special election

Two precincts vote Yes, Moist, but City of Jamestown votes No, to remain dry.

By Ed Waggener

Voters in the Jamestown and Lake Precincts voted to allow beer and wine sales in restaurants in the special election Tuesday, November 24, 2009.

The vote in the Lake Precinct was:
Yes, Moist, 242 votes
No, Dry 203 votes
The vote in the Jamestown Precinct was:
Yes, Moist, 227 votes
No, Dry, 215 votes
The vote in the City of Jamestown Precinct was:
Yes, Moist, 243 votes
No, Dry, 274 votes
A question remains on whether the portions of Lake Precinct and Jamestown Precinct which are also part of the City of Jamestown will be wet, since the precincts voted moist, or dry, since the City of Jamestown voted No.

A spokesperson in the office of Russell County Court Clerk Latisha Popplewell said her best guess is, "I don't know." And that seems to be the street consensus this morning.

It is expected that the question will be settled in court.

Hopes Mayor Bloomberg doesn't see Shamarie's work

Fears he may want to hold her captive, to run NYC public relations

Ed--

If Mayor Bloomberg sees any of Shamarie's work, and her captions, he is going to hold her captive in NYC, and put her in charge of Public Relations. So far, my favorite caption is under the photo of the New Yorker Hotel and the Empire State building, 11-25-09. I've never seen the Chrsyler Building pictured from the angle Shamarie used.

I cannot thank her enough, and you, for publishing this body of work. Keep it coming. As a public service, can you insert a line between photos, just once in awhile, suggesting that we stop admiring the stories and pictures, and check on the turkey ???????

Thanks,
s/Mary Knight

Thanks, Mary Knight. You've put into words something we've all been thinking but haven't been able to put into the right words, or perhaps we know that talent like Shamarie's is one of America's best kept secrets. -EW

Was Bub Polston Hawk swooping to get little 8 lb. dog?

Red tailed hawk or chicken hawk or whatever, raptor swooped in to get closer look at petHr>About: Redtailed hawks not good at swooping, Wendy Burt says

Ed:

Don't know what type Hawk is in Bub's picture, but it likely the same one that has been swooping in to take a closer look at my little 8 lb dog.Bub Polston is my neighbor and this Hawk has been in our neighborhood for a couple of weeks now. It swooped in at her (my little 8 lb. dog) one morning and I thought for a second it was going to pick her up before I could even react.

Does anyone know if it is capable of picking up a little dog?

Iris bloom in November on Lampton Lane, Columbia, KY

Click on headline for phographic proof, and full story

By Ed Waggener

We got this word in from Lampton Lane, from Patty Green, who sent picture proof of the phemenon:
"Ed, I thought it was interesting that today (11-24-09) I found this iris in the flower bed in full bloom so I guess it is like me kinda confused on the weather, I live on Lampton lane so it must be coming spring here, I can't remember ever seeing an iris bloom before this time of year. s/Patty Green"
With the election season here, it will remind everyone of the late, great Columbia Mayor Coy Downey, who promised to make the roses bloom in January and was responsible for a lot of the dogwoods and redbuds in the city.

The photo is posted, and we'll post more as the cold season comes on, if the seasons don't manage to stay in order.

Linda and I saw a gorgeous yellow iris in bloom on Saturday, but that was way back on November 21, 2009, and it was a way down south on KY 100 in, I believe, Monroe County. As anyone who has travelled KY 100 knows, it's not an easy road to find pull offs. We were driving as safely as we could, with the passenger describing the spectacular scenery along the way. -EW
