A Sonnet by Robert Stone: Return

Return

When comfort tricks us into answers shared
although there is no reason for the talk,
how better would it be to not have dared
to step along a no-return steep walk.

When fear has left us questions still unasked
although there is no call to hesitate,
how worse to reach for good and find unmasked
indifference that will not love or hate.

When thoughtless action brings unkind response
although intent was not to harm or hurt,
how much we need to swap our nonchalance
for diligence and keeping sharp alert.

Unpleasant are the lessons that return
when we from faults and failures fail to learn.

--- Robert Stone, 22 November 2009

Scenic Old House Series inaugurated by Mike Ratliff

Click on headline for story + photo(s)

By Mike Ratliff

I recently took these on a couple of very nice days. As I've driven the roads of southcentral Kentucky over the past few years, I've noticed many old houses.

I thought I'd begin taking a few photos of them. I have one photo rule though: The picture must be taken from the cab of my truck. Don't worry, I'm very attentive and safe when I stop to take a photo.

I thought it might be interesting to post a photo and get feedback on the old house's history. Anyway, ... enjoy them.
Thanks. The series is now started. ColumbiaMagazine.com readers and photographers have proven they love the beauty of the old houses already. We wish there were a law protecting them. Everytime we see another old house gone it's a time of sadness for us. We like the idea of the Scenic Old House series, and hope to have more from Mike Ratliff and that other photographer's add to it, as well. Our rule, however, is that we'll accept them them even if they aren't taken from a cab of a pickup truck. That's an Arkansas thing, we suppose, and it's okay for Kentuckians to emulate the practice, if they are "very attentive when they stop to take a photo." -EW

I am in possession of a document that gives me such a view.

The next earlier Tom Chaney review is No. 43 A Mirror Into Life on To Protect and Defend by Richard North Patterson

By Tom Chaney

I reckon I need to tell why I was taken to the hospital and kept so long that the city of Louisville nigh registered me to vote.

Monday, November 10 I went out on Hatcher Valley Road to a friend's house to admit the telephone crew to set up his internet so he can watch the University of Kentucky ballgames.

I got out of the car and went to the front door and remember unlocking and opening it. I came to lying on the front porch trying to get up. Then I recall someone helping me up and getting me to a porch swing where I came around mostly. The young man who helped me up was a member of the county road crew whom I had passed on the way up. They were cutting brush and chipping it up.

Chuck Hinman, IJMA No. 323 Hi! Where Are You From?

"It struck me that this is a kind of 'Thanksgiving' story," editor Robert Stone wrote when he sent this absolute jewel of a story about the state made famous here by Chuck Hinman, few in Adair County know anything about except from Mrs. Mary Richards geography class at Adair County High School where we learned the delicious word 'unicameral', or from the two people we know who have actually been there, Tim Loy, who has made a solemn vow to return to Nebraska, eat the best steak in Omaha, and send an engineer's analysis back for the Epicurean Kentuckian series; and Dr. Phil Aaron, who reported on communities in Nebraska where, our, Arkansas' and Oklahoma's Janice Holt Giles vies with Nebraska's Willa Cather for favorite writer - almost. This is 'IT'S JUST ME AGAIN', No. 123, "Hi! Where are You From," by Chuck Hinman, fast becoming many Adair Countians favorite writer. And by the way, if you decide to go to Liberty, NE, you might make it in time for supper tonight. It's 781 miles from the Courthouse in Columbia, KY. A trip would be homage to the late Homer Goodin, who took a similar trip to Muskogee,OK, on a whim one morning after being inspired by the song 'Okie from Muskogee.' -EW
The next earlier Chuck Hinman story, accompanied by a Tim Loy travel photo of 'The Sower Atop the Nebraska State Capitol', is at Chuck Hinman IJMA No. 327: The Sower Atop Nebraska's Capitol Building

by Chuck Hinman

Most people like to brag about where they are "from." Nobody claims to be from "here" even though they have lived "here" much longer than the place they're "from."

Carol Perkins: On the Pond Bank

Carol Perkins writes about a wonderful part of entire life: Always having access to the three Reece farm ponds, all loaded with fish
The next earlier Carol Perkins story: GPS

By Carol Perkins

Although I am the least likely candidate for an outdoor sporting event, I do like to fish. I have always had access to a pond loaded with fish. As a matter of fact, there was a "front" pond, and "upper" pond and a "lower" pond on the Reece farm where I spent many summer afternoons.

The "front" pond was deep, and never did I go across the yard with my pole in my hand that I didn't hear, "Stay away from the edge!"
