Tom Chaney: Getting High in Horse Cave: Helicopters and Chemicals A Special Report Of Tom Chaney, The Writer of Of Writers And Their Books, a special report by Tom Chaney, Friday, 20 November 2009: Getting High in Horse Cave -- Helicopters and Chemicals The next earlier Tom Chaney review is No. 43 A Mirror Into Life on To Protect and Defend by Richard North Patterson By Tom Chaney I reckon I need to tell why I was taken to the hospital and kept so long that the city of Louisville nigh registered me to vote. Monday, November 10 I went out on Hatcher Valley Road to a friend's house to admit the telephone crew to set up his internet so he can watch the University of Kentucky ballgames. I got out of the car and went to the front door and remember unlocking and opening it. I came to lying on the front porch trying to get up. Then I recall someone helping me up and getting me to a porch swing where I came around mostly. The young man who helped me up was a member of the county road crew whom I had passed on the way up. They were cutting brush and chipping it up. Friend David Bunnell was in the second truck. He took me to the Caverna Hospital. He did not put me in the chopper. This was about the third time I had passed out and the second time I had gone to the hospital. Before they had sent me to a neurosurgeon in Bowling Green, for they suspected an aneurism. That doctor said it was not such and prescribed some chemicals. Dizziness accompanied that event so I went to Dr. Wilson who deals with dizzy folks and that cleared up. This time, again, Caverna suspected neurological problems and called for an helicopter to get me to the University of Louisville hospital. I allowed that I had never flown in such a machine before. They said they could fix that and again gave me some nice chemicals. Better living through chemistry. They crammed me into the helicopter. Different from MASH where the patient rides on the outside. I was right next to the pilot, and I mentioned that I had never flown in one of these before. "Don't worry," he replied, "It's my first time, too." It took about two days in the hospital for the neurology folks to admit that the problem was in my heart. Evidently the passing out was caused by the heart rate dropping. By the weekend it was decided to go for a pace maker. This past Monday they threaded some wires up my artery from down about my forked parts, so they could see just what was up with the heart. Tuesday they installed the pacemaker. Wednesday they sent me home. Evidently the ticket on the helicopter was not a round trip. A friend came to get me. Fortunately Bob Beimdick and Steve Self have kept things going at The Bookstore. Now that I'm back, I've been here all day -- not doing much. The main problem with being sent that quickly to the hospital was not having time to gather enough reading material to last for an indefinite state. Thanks to Bob Beimdick and Rob Stout I got a sufficient supply of books to avoid complete boredom. Thanks to all for phone calls and concern. Few have said aloud that they were disappointed not to see me at the undertakers.
