BILL PADGETT, a member of the staff at the Adair County Recycling Center, said that the new recycling trailer needs only one label to be ready to put into use. She's hoping to get Wal-Mart or another major Jamestown Street retailer to allow the recycling trailer to be stationed there, at a central point, to allow people from all parts of the county to use it. Later this first trailer will be rotated to community points to including outlying communities in the county. Adair County's Recycling program has been a resounding success, with every major government, institution, and business entity, with the exception of the City of Columbia, enthusiastically participating. Recalling the saga of a great hog, Gen. Veelie of Russell Co., KY

A story published in print issue No. 10, Columbia Magazine! recorded the life of General Veelie, told by the late Carlos Mann, about a great hog which roamed the woods around Rockhouse Bottom, on the Cumberland River, and whose annual captures were mostly destined to fail, even when General Veelie was sold as far away as Columbia, KY. He always escaped and returned to his same woods around Creelsboro.

Ultimately his fate to become porkchops and bacon was assured when an entire streamship crew at Burnside transferred him to a Cincinnati processing plant-bound railcar. Click Here for "How General Veelie's life on the lam ended.

Agenda, Adair Fiscal Court reg. Sept. 9, 2008 meeting

Adair Fiscal Court will meet in regular session on Tuesday, September 9, 2008, at 7:00pmCT with a shorter than usual 22 item agenda. The county will consider property tax rates for 2008.

The rate will take advantage of the 4% overall increase instead of the lower compensating rate, but most rates will actually be lower because of re-evaluations by the PVA's office and additional property added to the rolls in the past year.

Thank you for a well-written story. Too much of what I read locally is poorly written and borders on editorial writings instead of news. This feature item was refreshingly fun.
