Markings on Highway 55N now broke, needs fixing

Betty Coop writes:
Highway 55N has been the scene of several accidents in the past. I cannot see the advantage to this new way of marking the lanes. It causes confusion, which I fear will cause more accidents. There is an old saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." It wasn't. It is. It needs fixing! - Betty Coop

Christopher Rowe: Shakespeare quote incomplete

Christopher Rowe writes:
All respect to Mr. Fudge for his comments, but his offering of Cassius's line is incomplete. In telling Brutus that their woes could not or should not be blamed on "the stars," he was speaking of Caesar's bullying, world-bestriding ways, and the whole line is this: "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars / But in ourselves, that we are underlings."

As I sit here in the family waiting room outside of the Kentucky Children's Hospital's pediatric intensive care unit, I am intensely wary of any moves to designate opposing sides in an issue - the issue of these lanes and their design - where clearly nobody wants anything but improved safety for all users of the public roads. But other things are equally clear. Poor road design DOES lead to accidents, and no matter how completely or incompletely we choose to quote Shakespeare, we, the users of the roads, are the underlings to those who made - years ago now - the political decisions to (under)fund and go forward with this project as implemented. - Christopher Rowe

Billy Joe Fudge: Don't blame engineers for driver problems

Next earlier item, this story: Says Heartland Parkway road markings 'flabbergasting'

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
I can agree that a highway with turning lanes would have been preferable in so many ways but to blame engineers for accidents caused by inattention and inexperience exacerbated by excessive speeding, changing lanes without signaling, passing on shoulders and a blatant disregard for the safety and well-being of one's fellow man is, in my opinion, reflective of "our blame everyone else for our own shortcomings" culture. "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves..." -Billy Joe Fudge

Personal commentary

Keith, Emmy and I went to Milton, KY, on September 30 and we were -- I guess "flabbergasted" is the best word to use here -- at the lane markings between here and the Taylor County line on Highway 55. Who set these out? And where/what was the logic behind it?

North Highway 55: You can't combine passing/turning lane

There have been numerous accidents on this stretch of road. Now, someone's child & grandchild has paid the price for someone's engineering mistakes. Let's keep this child in our prayers. - JAMES ROBERTS

By James Roberts
Personal commentary

I don't claim to be a very smart person. It doesn't take an Einstein to know that you cannot combine a turning lane & passing lane together. Before this road was finished I told my family that it wasn't going to work. I've had my own experience trying to turn into Betty's OK country cooking & someone trying to pass at the same time. There have been numerous accidents on this stretch of road. Now, someone's child & grandchild has paid the price for someone's engineering mistakes. Let's keep this child in our prayers. Who ever came up with this brilliant passing lane fiasco should be fired & held accountable! Thanks, - James Roberts. Linda Cook: Is it too late for a do-over before a fatality?

Heartland Parkway design problems

Linda Cook writes:
Was on my way to Campbellsville last week when this same thing nearly happened. A 4-wheel drive truck passed me and attempted to overtake what was ahead. Guess they got quite a surprise to come up on someone sitting at a dead stop in the passing lane waiting for oncoming traffic to clear for a left turn onto whatever side road. Makes you wonder if whomever at the Transportation Department designed this did not take the side roads and left hand turns into consideration. Is it too late for a do-over before a fatality? --Linda Cook

Comments on safety of new (Heartland Pkwy) road design

Robert Cumming writes:
I believe this is already the second collision accident at the Ky 55 and Keltner Rd intersection since the recent Hwy 55 improvements began last month. I don't understand why with the new road signs and pavement markings drivers are so reluctant to accept new road changes and pay particular attention to no passing zones and maintaining assured clear distances. - Robert Cumming
